Hurrah! It's August and holiday time, how are you all?

A cooler night, thank heavens, and I managed to have a thin cover on for the first time in weeks! it's really weird sleeping without a cover.

Sparkling, maybe re the painting you will need someone to do the high and low bits and you can do the bits in between? or do you have a long-handled brush? Depend how high the ceiling is, I guess. How is your tum? better I hope. Are you all set for tomorrow? Wink

PQ I agree the Hayley story is very affecting and I, too, have shed some tears, it has been well-written and well acted. Maybe it set you thinking about life and death in general? It will be nice if you get an assistant at work. Did this come out of the time and motion thing you did recently? Tell us about the new bathroom....

Hope everyone will have a good day, it is lovely to have hazeleyes back Smile

Good morning all!!! No cooler night here, it's lovely and hot AND I have today off! Daughter went on the plane to Germany on Tuesday, No2 son stayed at a friends last night. No3 son was home, had tidied up a bit and didn't go out - he seems to not be working anymore (sigh), but I can't get any information out of him. Another ten days then I'll be off for two weeks, picking up daughter. No1 son has promised to move in for that time to keep an eye.

Will enjoy the sunshine today - going out with the girls tonight. All is good.

Happy August!

ive ordered a shower/bath so will need the bathroom door moving. And they're going to slim down the boxes g in round the waste pipe to move the toilet too. Quite a bit more tha  just replacing the suite. It will look lovely once it's done.

the extra person at work is to do with an extra role I took on last year. The demand for it has increased about 10 fold over the last 2 months and I can't keep up and do my own job. Quite a few complaints have been made as I can't respond quick enough, not about me personal thankfully.

i bet youre looking forward to your holiday hopeful.

Hi Hopeful a great day for you! A day off and the sun is shining, I hope you are having a lovely day and wish you a brill night tonight. I bet you are looking forward to the 2weeks off, will you spend that whole time in Germany? It sounds as though communication with No3 son has completely ground to a halt. What does he do with his time if he isn't working, do you know?

I don't watch Corrie pq, but it sounds as though it is pretty emotive right now. Sometimes I think having a good cry helps anyway!

sparkling, decorating! Your favourite! I can't believe it was 2 years ago that you had the electrics done, doesn't time fly! I think you should do as much as you can and get the children or neighbours to help. OR just get the children to do it. Many hands make light work and its good team building!

My daughter and I love decorating, we have been generally whitewashing the flat, with occasional wall paper! I used to have very strong colours in all the rooms, but I seem to need gentle! All rooms are done, except the hallway - I live in a maisonette with front door on the ground floor, so two flights of stairs and we are in a georgian house, so the hallway is a huge job, don't know when I will get around to it. It is at times like these I wish I had a large strapping teen to get on and do it for me!!

I was out yesterday evening with some 'new' friends, although I've known them through the housing association place.  One has offered to come and do the high bits - but we shall see!  At least it was nice of him to offer...

The ceilings are quite low here, so perhaps with a handle on the paint pad thing I have I might be able to do it.  The children did paint the hallway which is the most challenging bit here.

I'd like to see the kitchen finished too.

your maisonette sounds lovely Anna.

Daughter has been busy making cup cakes for me to take into work.  She seems to expect me to have some sympathy as she's left a note to say she went to bed at 3am - but then maybe she should have started to make them earlier!! Cool

I hope you had a good night out hopeful.

We didn't end up having a scorcher of a day yesterday, and although the sun is shining at the moment the forecast is for rain.  So long as I don't get too drenched going out this evening - although I think it is down to me and one other - August is never the best of time to have an evening out with a few having gone away.

I had a lovely catch up on the phone with a dear friend yesterday evening. although a short conversation compared to what we usually have.

I hope everyone enjoys the day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR DEAR SPARKLING LIME!!! Kiss You are such an asset to One Space that it is a pleasure to have an excuse to honour you. Hope they are extra nice to you at work today, and armed with your cupcakes, why wouldn't they be? Glad you are doing a few nice social things and enjoy your outing tonight.

Re decorating, I reckon any help is good help! Wink A friend of mine wanted a part in a local operatic production but could not read music so I coached him for the part and in return he painted my ceiling (haha that sounds rude, sorry!) Seriously, a bit of skills exchange is a great idea.

PQ your bathroom sounds fab! And it is good for you to have someone to support you at work, might make things less stressed?

Hopeful you are nearly at your holiday, and it will be a well-deserved break. Glad the sun has been shining for you Smile

Son has settled back at home after his ridiculous week away. He has finished with his lovely girlfriend, I am very sad about it, they have not fallen out but he just feels he does not want to be tied into a relationship at his age. It set me thinking that we as parents make relationships with our children's friends and associates and yet it is out of our control as to whether they stay in our lives.....it's a weird feeling.

And on a brighter note: who fancies an ice-cream??? Laughing

Happy happy Birthday, Sparkling! Make sure everyone spoils you!

I so understand what you mean about the girlfriend thing, Louise. Mind, it takes a while till I am 'allowed' to meet them. I never had that problem when I was young...

I had a lovely time with my friends last night. We went to an Italian restaurant by the creek and watched the boats go by. I had a surprise present from them for graduating - they gave me a lovely silver buckle for the belt that goes on the uniform dresses (now I have to get a uniform dress - I put all my uniform allowance into trousers and tunics. tricky one, but if that is my only problem I won't complain).

A very cheeky mouse came in through the back door yesterday afternoon and hid under the piano. No2 son tried to catch it, but to no avail. In the night the cat was chasing a mouse - but I am not sure this is the same one! - which hid under the hoover. He was too stupid to catch it when I lifted the hoover, so now I potentially have two mice in the house. Maybe I should let the snake out, too....

We just had a little thunderstorm, but already it's getting close again. I don't mind - I like it hot!

Wishing everyone a lovely day!

Hi everyone! Its Friday and I definately have that 'Crunchie' feeling (do you remember that advert?!)

Huge Happy Birthday our fabulous sparklinglime!! Kiss Big hugs and kisses from me, I found a beautiful cake and tried to insert it (an image!) into this post, but for some reason it wont' be allowed, but it was a huge cake to you from us! I hope you are spoilt rotten, by your children and you have a nice evening tonight. I look forward to hearing about it.

Hopeful, how lovely to be given a graduation present! Sounds like you have some great friends there. I am sure if there are mice in the house your cat will catch them eventually, no?

Louise, count me in for ice cream....my daughter is a huge Ben & Jerry's fan (was going to initial that rather than advertise, but thought better of it!! Wink Apparently a new flavour is coming to the UK peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter cups! YUMMEEEEE!

I hope everyone is well, enjoying the summer hols and has a restful weekend.

I've had a really lovely day.  No one got up this morning, which wasn't perhaps the best of starts, but work had gifts on my desk and card, and the notice board had happy birthday to me on it.

That was so lovely after the tough going its been.

I came home to find the house with banners and balloons all over, and a bowl of skittles on the coffee table with cards besides it.

Really lovely.

I've had a laugh with my friend - yes, sadly only one was able to come.  We had ice cream for dessert (we don't usually do dessert).  I have now cracked open a bottle of sparkling wine that I've been saving for ages.

Tomorrow I won't be going anywhere.

Hopefuly, that really was lovely.

I'm sorry that you son's finished with the lovely girfriend Louise.  I've been lucky in that I've been able to stay in touch with a  couple of ex's of my children (but then they are young).

Good morning lovely people!

Glad you had a such a good day, sparkling, you deserve it and can I ask you to reflect on recent birthdays, this sounds like the best one in a long time, and shows me that there is great progress in your life Smile So it is a quiet day today?

Hopeful did you track down the mouse? It would have been really scared of course but that is no consolation is it? haha yes letting the snake out might be a plan.Your prezzie sounds lovely.

Anna hope you have a good weekend. I did laugh about your Ben and J comment!!! Just as bad as me "having my ceiling painted" Not sure about the peanut butter though, I am very staid re ice cream and like raspberry ripple. What is everyone else's favourite flavours?

Someone hacked into my son's FB last night and put that he was In a Relationship again. I wondered if it was the girlfriend?

Went to a funeral yesterday. I didnt know the lady well but her husband is a friend of mine. It was one of those "celebration of life" ones. However, there were some funny incidents where I had to restrain myself from giggling, including our young pastor arriving in a posh suit (usually wears jeans) and discovering too late that the jacket had a massive streak of white emulsion on the sleeve, the coffin arriving and the music starting up and us all standing up and waiting and waiting and nothing happening (the husband of the deceased was mega-late and stuck in traffic) and finally the hymn to piped music that went really fast and the congregation singing in a slow ponderious fashion, far behind the breakneck music. Oh dear.

What's everyone up to today?

Oh dear, Louise, that will be a funeral to be remembered.  I hope her husband is ok...

It is the best birthday I've possibly had since before I had children - again, that was going to work that made the day.

I'm meant to have breakfast in bed, but have been awake for about an hour and a half and am now bored.  I can see myself getting up and pouring the cornflakes into the bowl myself.

I hope everyone has at least a peaceful weekend.

Hi ladies (and any gents who may be reading!),

How are you all?  I've been working flat out for the last 5 weeks so haven't been online.  I hope you're all coping with having the kids at home this summer holiday!  I've been working at a language summer school - had a great time and met some fantastic people - although I was the oldest by far (nearly 35, hardly ancient but..).  I thrived on the witty, fun banter between the teachers and support staff - made me feel like a person again, not just the mother or the bill-payer; even had a short but enjoyable flirtation with a 25 year old!  Oh yes!  The girl's still got it! Wink

It's bright and breezy here today so I hope you all have some sun too. Meeting a friend and some of their family for a meal later so that will be good. Son had a very late night so not sure if there is any news on that front.

I took my daughter up to South Stack to see the sunset last night - but it was cloudy, with the teeniest patch of sky. The ride was mainly to show her the way though, as she wants to go up there with her friends.

I have taken them to these places over the years.  They've always had views pointed out to them, and always looked out of the windows - as we're so blessed in where we live, it's so beautiful.  And I cannot believe she doesn't know the way!!  Her friend came along too, and we did have a laugh.

I'm not sure what houskeeping avoidance plans I have as yet.

Hi everyone - still warm and sunny down here, yay!!!

The mouse saga goes on: And please bear in mind that the cat is called Sylvester for a really good reason - he is just as stupid as the cartoon version.

I got home yesteday to find No2 son in front of the piano on his tummy saying the cat had brought in yet another mouse! No2 son is a lot better at catching mice than Sylvester and he got that one. No idea what happened to the other one or two. I hope they found their way out!

My boss has signed the sheet asking for a uniform dress for me - it's above my allowance, but we'll try anyway. So fingers crossed this will go through!

Hope everyone is ok today! :-)

Hi all,

sparklinglime, your birthday sounded absolutely lovely, I am so glad you had a good one. I hope you managed to stick to the housework avoidance plan, it was your birthday weekend after all!

Hopeful, sorry to hear that the mice are still on the rampage and fingers crossed about the uniform dress. We had rain yesterday and today the weather is looking a bit dismal, but it is still reasonably warm, so not all bad!

The poll! This has raised much discussion, for many different reasons from quite a few different people and my conclusion is that our money and how we spend it is very personal.  Some of us, just don't think about why we buy what we buy and then are surprised when our money runs out, some of us spend what we think we 'should' (up to the minute fashion or decor) and others daren't spend anything at all!

The reason the poll was created came from a discussion with a colleague and we found it interesting how much importance the other person placed on items that we deemed irrelevant. This poll won't be used for research just for discussion :)

Hi sarahb34, your summer sounds fun! I think it is so important to get out and be around other adults when our children are small, it sounds as though it did you a world of good!

Hi hazeleyes, I hope you are well and enjoying the hols?

Louise, I hope you had a nice time with family yesterday?

Hi everyone and a belated happy birthday to sparkling.

Well I went away for a lovely weekend with my girls a great friend and her son. It was a birthday treat for me and we had a great time. Unfortunately when we got back last I discovered we'd been burgled! The police have been great and my dad is coming later to fix the front door and add a lock. We all feel very vulnerable especially h who insisted on sleeping in my bed not that I slept much. What a horrible way to end such a lovely weekend :(

Sorry to hear about the burglary PQ.

Hello to everyone else.

Trip to the bank didn't go well last week. They didn't laugh at me, but also didn't give me any real options to give ex his money. They are happy to arrange a transfer of equity and to let me have the mortgage in my name only, but will not agree to any additional funds. Ho hum. Well at least I've asked, which is what I told ex I would do.

J and I are on holiday this week, can't you tell by the weather! We've met friends today at a playcentre and tomorrow its a play centre and lunch with my sister. Wednesday we are going to the Robin Hood Festival at Sherwood Forest. J is very excited to see the jousting. Am hoping it will be slightly less packed during the week than it is at the weekend!

Oh pq I am so sorry to hear about that. As you may know, I had an attempted break-in here last year and I appreciate how unsettling it can be. Are you able to have the Crime Prevention Officer round to make any recommendations? One of the best ones given to me was to have a windchime/rattly mobile suspended just inside the door so it would make a big noise if the door was opened and crashed into it. My neighbour has a key and opens and closes curtains for me when I am away too. Glad you have a good weekend before that and I hope things soon settle down Kiss

Sparkling we have had a lot of rain too. Funny how someone can go somewhere so often and not know the way. She will only really know the way after she has been the driver a couple of times

Hopeful fingers crossed for your dress so you can wear the buckle! Yes the poll would depend on whether someone smokes or drinks or not. Some people might decide to buy (even) cheaper food rather than go without, for example.

Hi Hazeleyes, hope hope the hols are going well, yes an early celebration meal. I have been to a soft play place today with my friend and their niece and four year old twins, known as The Twins of Terror, although they are actually lovely children.

PQ, what an awful thing to come home to, I am so sorry to read about that. Did they take anything? Was anyone else in your area targetted? I love the idea of the door chimes, inside the door. Is that something you would consider? Hope the girls have settled and you have your own bed back soon.

Looby, you said you would go to the bank and you did, sorry it wasnt a better outcome. I hope you have a great week with J, Sherwood Forest sounds fab!

kiera, your weekend sounded good, fun with all the children, with your daugher visiting too :)

sparklinglime, are you having a good week? I googled South Stack, it looks like a beautiful place to watch the sun set.

Good morning to you all

Thanks, lots of thanks for the lovely birthday wishes, I had a really good day with plenty of cards and messages and one or two lovely surprises arriving Wink Went out for a meal on Monday night and am seeing some friends tomorrow for a belated celebration with a CURRY, yum. Eldest is coming on Saturday.

Anna did you get the wallpaper sorted? I am strictly a paint person, wallpapering is so hard, you are a heroine!

PQ how are you feeling? Hope things are a bit calmer

Looby you did what was asked re the mortgage, and now I am glad you are having a good week. Hope the jousting goes well, we have it at the Royal Armouries up here, you can see the blokes have a real competition going on between them, it's not just for show.

Hazeleyes, ooh you should definitely think of something nice for you while C is off on his little jaunt. Even if it is only the food you like, a movie you like, turn your routine upside down for a few days, you know you work so hard as a parent that a few days as a non-parent will be just the ticket. You could also do some cheap stuff such as sort through all your old photos and put them in a nice album, make a list of your 12 favourite music tracks in case you get invited on "Desert Island Discs", visit your local library and get a good book out, go to a gallery and see some fab pictures, find a local beauty spot and just SIT, with no-one saying "mum...mum.."

I love decluttering, it always makes me feel energised, well done you, One lady once said to me "imagine you are emigrating, what do you take? throw everything else away" Bit drastic but you get the picture.

Sparkling not long now until your break, what are you going to do? Some R and R?

Hopeful how are you?

Kiera thinking of you in court today, good luck.

I am going to look at keyboards today, music ones that is. I played the piano for many years and took pupils while the boys were little, got rid of the piano in the end as this is such a small house but would like a keyboard for a bit of tinkering around.

Today daughter and youngest were at the dentist.  I asked them to walk down, but youngest got up late so daughter drove.

I met them there, and had a lovely time chatting with the dental nurses.

Then I made the mistake of asking daughter to get milk from the supermarket, and that I'd wait for youngest and take him home...

Phone call from daughter "I've hit another car"

Ok, not as bad as it could be, and no one hurt etc etc...  BUT a scratched door that if i can't be polished out I am going to have to pay for.  Never mind the scratches on my car!!!!!

I've  been stuck in the glums Since the break in. Not helped having an upset tummy, think that may be stress related. Given myself a bit of a pep talk today and am trying to snap out of it but its hit me hard. I've hardly slept since Sunday and have eaten 2 slices of toast since Monday. Sorry to hear you can't settle Pq. My sis in law was same when she was burgled, she used to go to bed and leave a radio on in the kitchen. We did have a giggle when she was burgled though. The burglars had gone through her DVD collection one by one and you could see the reject pile they had left on the floor - they were all sis in laws favourites!

A belated happy birthday Louise. Hi to everyone else.

Me and J are having a fab week so far. Went to Sherwood Forest today. It was jam packed, but we got there early so parking wasn't a problem. We watched a show in the open air theatre, watched jousting which J loved. He even went and took part in the falconry display and had the bird land on his arm. I was so proud I nearly cried! He is usually so shy at joining in with things if there is a large group, but he was determined he was doing it today. We tried archery and crossbows. I even tried archery. The instructor was impressed as I hit target four out of five times. He asked if I'd done it before and I said no, I was just pretending it was my ex! The woman behind nearly choked :-)

Hope everyone is enjoying their week

Ho hum.  The car door that daughter knocked while worryingly driving forward has very deep scratches and will need a respray.  Looking at the damage to mine, I knew that there was little chance of polishing them out.

I'm glad last week was a good week.  As this week is turning out to be so very different.  Nothing, I know compared to your nightmare pq.

That's a shame sparkling are re-sprays very expensive?

sounds like you had a good day looby. Your story about your sis-in law made me laugh. The burglar took my dodgy laptop, some foreign currency worth about £5 and a mobile that doesn't work so nothing of value. Unfortunately there was all my digital photos on my laptop and over 500 photos on the mobile, that's the upsetting part.

Pq so sorry to hear about your home being burgled. It's such a horrible feeling And makes you feel unsafe for a long time. Never mind the inconvienience and loss! I had one of huge huge glass bottle full of pennes 5ps 10ps, they even took that! Must have been really heavy. Probably only £ 20-25. Was still gutted though! So sad about your photos. Must get round to saving all mine online! Would be devistated to lose my babies pics!

Sparkling, what a nightmare. I remember 2 weeks after I got my first car I pulled out of a friends drive and hit the next door neighbours car (he was a police man). I was so scared I drove off then rang my friends mum to go and tell him.

i've had a better week. Had my mortgage offer and have come to an agreement with ex about buying him out. But have felt very lonely and done a lot of crying. Ex has new girlfriend already. Going to see gp today. Had my first proper child free day yesterday and although I thought I'd feel sad and lost I actually enjoyed it.

hope you all have some sunshine today x

Hello everyone

Yes the photos, they are of no use to other people, PQ. (definitely worth re-saving photos on an extra memory stick, everyone..and even getting someone else to have that memory stick I reckon) it will take a while for you to feel settled again, the radio sounds a good idea as does leaving a light on.

Eurgh sorry to hear about the car, sparkling, NOT what you need. What will the cost be? try not to get too despairing about the "pattern of the week" as that will bring you down more.

Looby your day sounds fantastic!!! I loved the comments about SiL's DVDs and what you said about the archery. Is it a quieter day today for you?

Kiera time to make plans now about a new focus for your life Laughing

Anna hello and what are you up to? I have found a Tai Chi class that starts in September "for the more mature person" (heh heh) so am going to investigate that!

I got the new keyboard yesterday and it is fab....except one of the notes is duff so I will have to ring the man today and look at an exchange, but am really going to enjoy playing it. Looking forward to seeing eldest on Saturday.

Morning all.

I have to say I am paranoid about having all my photos backed up. We had a computer die once and we lost everything. That was before J came along. I have them backed up on a flash drive which I store in the safe at work. Ex also has a copy of all J's photos.

Another busy one for us today. Just finished the picnic packing and we are off to theme park with my nieces and sister. This week off is wearing me out!

Have a good day everyone.

Wow, Looby, your week sounds like great fun! I bet everyone is sleeping very well.

Louise your keyboard sounds fab, do you have headphones to plug in or will the whole world hear you practicing?!

Rosie, so glad to hear that you enjoyed your child free time, that was a relief! Good to read that you have come to an agreement with your ex about buying him out.

pq, i am so sorry to hear about the photos, they are so precious, I am not surprised you are feeling blue. I guess I know that your next purchase will be a separate hard drive to store any future photos on. Did you have any insurance, were the old things taken covered?

kiera I am glad that the court date is out of the way and although it was a tough day, you are now out the other side, phew!

sparklinglime, I bet your daughter feels awful, I swear they are sent to try us.

I have hot yoga tonight, would prefer to go home and relax today, its been quite an exhausting few weeks, however I know once I get going I will be glad that I have done it.

Have a lovely time, Hopeful...a well-deserved break!

Rosie I think our posts crossed last time, the financial thing has been an upheaval for you so am not surprised there were a few tears. How did you get on at the GP?

Looby you are having such a fastastic week, I am glad for you

How did you all sleep, PQ?

Well done if you got to the yoga, Anna, it is hard to "make" ourselves do these things sometimes...Well I have not got any headphones with the keyboard so have to be careful what time I practice. There is a headphone attachment though. I love the harpsicord mode on the keyboard! Am going to concentrate on a couple of pieces and getting them spot-on. I got some 2nd hand music from the local Oxfam shop.

Had a lovely curry with two friends last night as a late birthday celebration, we had to wait as one friend has a grown-up daughter and we were waiting for her to return so she could babysit the youngest child. The other friend has a partner who has been blocked from seeing his five year old daughter from a former relationship. My friend has a disability but the child's mum has lied in her statement and said she does not want the daughter to see her as she is terminally ill. In the hands of CAFCASS now. It is interesting to see things from this other side as usually on these boards we are supporting the parent with care.

Have a good day everyone Laughing

Morning all,

I returned to work yesterday which was a struggle, a few tears with my colleagues who have been very supportive. Today I feel more composed and a bit more together so onward and upward!

I haven't been intouch with my insurance company yet, but its a job I intend to do tomorrow now I feel a bit brighter. I'm not sure I will get any money as the laptop was very old and not worth anything but I will try.

Hope everyone is ok and looking forward to the weekend.
