Hello and it is August already!!

What does this month hold? Well, PQ is back to work, good luck with that, Hopeful has her placement, Hazeleyes has her home improvements and....sparkling has a Very Important Day tomorrow. You have been very quiet on the topic of your birthday, sparkling, have you got any plans or are you hoping to have a quiet day?

Yep, August already. Not finished here yet, sorting out bits and pieces that have been thrown in living room and now my bedroom. Will be nice to see my carpet again! Had to dismantle another wardrobe, so that is against my living room wall, waiting to go in the garden. Put the 2nd wardrobe together, and my back is paining, so shall potter today, trying to get place back in order. Had C up A and E yesterday. Has a bruised and swollen sole. Kicked the bed, in frustration, playing a WII game!! He might have chipped a bone, but didn't do xray, because of the radiation! Has only had one xray. Anyhow, if no better in a week, go to GP for a referral for xray, or straight back to A and E.

Two birthdays very soon Louise Wink What have you planned for yours? Sparkling is keeping low as it's (dare I say) the biggie?

Yes, hazeleyes you need to make sure you have plenty of the holidays left to relax.

Sparkling, we will let you keep a low profile on the birthday front if that's what you wish Wink As for mine, no party but have been doing itty bitty things with friends, won't see eldest but will have meal out at a new bistro that has opened in town, with some friends in the evening.

Is everyone having a good day?

Hello Ladies,

I'm quite new to this and haven't really introduced myself yet...So Hi :).

I do hope u are all enjoying ur summer holidays with ur little sweethearts.

I'm just back from a weeks holiday caravaning with my girls. Had a fab time and now we're about to take in all the museums and parks in our city. Started yesterday. Luckily for us there are loads locally and they're all FREE. this really is a great way to pass a few days during the holidays for a single parent.

I hope u all have some lovely things planned yourselves. :).

I would also appreciate if anyone has any other ideas of things to do during these long holidays. Keeping the kids occupied can be the key to keeping them happy.

Thank you. :)

Hi everyone and happy August - welcome shelleigh to the chat room Smile

Well done hazeleyes, you really are storming through aren't you! I spent my annual leave away and now I want more time, just to potter at home. It never quite feels the same at the weekends.

How was the caravanning shelleigh? i have very happy childhood memories of our orange interior caravan - so 1970's!!

As for things to do over the summer, have you had a look at our Family Fun section of the site?? Also have a look at the Local section of the site, click on your area and there maybe something going on in your area - no promises though Wink

Do you have a garden? My daughter and friends spent days one summer, camping out there in an old tent - I loved that!!

All is well here. Very excited - as I turn 40 this year I am giving myself a birthday present - I am getting my very short sighted eyes, lasered!! Eeek, dead nervous, but oh so excited!!!

Hi Anna,

Thank you and I will check this out. Missed that part of the sight. So much information on here :).

Glad to hear u had a nice holiday but yeah its never enough!! Haha.

The caravan was a great holiday and we went with some friends so makes it all the more special.

Not sure I'm brave enough to camp in the garden though but I might give it a try. I'm sure my daughters would love it.

Good luck with the laser eye treatment. :). I can see how u would be excitred. My aim for this year is teeth whitening. Saving at the moment for it.

Hi everyone, I can't believe August is upon us already.

Back to work today, I always find the first day back hard, its like I've forgotten what to do!!

Hello Shelleigh, nice to meet you. Keeping the children busy during this long holiday can be such hard work. How old are your daughters? Mine are 11 and 9. All they want to do is be at home so they can play out with their friends, as I work full time they don't get much time to be at home. Do you have bikes? I've just signed up with skyride which run free organised and accompanied bike rides for all levels of cyclists, my girls are really looking forward to it.

Anna, my mum had her eyes lazered, she says its the best thing she's ever done, I'm way to squeemish with my eyes to let anyone any where near them. I can't even cope with contact lenses!

Hazeleyes, you've been so busy! You must be feeling very satisfied as things get sorted. What will you do to relax when all your hard work is done?

Louise, it sounds like you've been doing some nice things for your birthday, and still more to look forward to.

Had a fab day in placement today, everything just seemed to work really well. Learned new stuff, too, and one of the patients wrote lovely things in my folder for uni.

Hope everyone is ok!

Anna good luck for the op and I hope it transforms your world!

Happy Birthday too! Lovely to hear that your friends have been down, it warms the soul doesn't it Smile

shelleigh, I don't think you need to camp too, just put the children in the tent and you can come inside!! Can you get interest free time to pay for the teeth whitening?

Hi pankcakequeen, I am going to check out skyride shortly and put the link in your post. Lots of people have said eye laser has changed their lives, I can't wait. Initially I wasn't interested, nor could I afford it. But when I spoke to a saleswoman, she said this time next week you could have 20/20 vision, I was hooked! I too am well squeamish about eyes, even stuff on the telly, but the other day I realised that it is a light rather than a needle that does your eyes. You know when you go to the opticians and they take photos now of your eyes. It will be like that AND it is painfree! I will let you know!

Glad you had a good day yesterday Hopeful, I hope today goes just as well, what a long day!

I am off for a meeting, oh, the sun was shining this morning, now it is raining and I don't have a coat or umbrella!!

Enjoy your book club Louise I finally gave into the 50 shades hype. OMG I am sure I could wade my way through treacle quicker. Did not expect a pulitzer prize. But sad to say I am still reading them, I then have a guilt trip just like when I tell myself that I am not going to read trashy celeb mags every week. I seriously need a life!

I've read the 50 shades trilogy, I found it totaly unbelievable (both the story and the charcters) but somehow couldn't put the them down!

Glad you had a rest today hazeleyes, sounds like you needed it.

Yes I an totally ashamed that I gave into peer pressure n have embarked on the 50 shades path? Dont know if I am under some spell but  would not normally read such drivel. Curiousity got the better of me, everyone talking about in work, on the kindle best seller list & dodgy programme on TV earlier this week. If I was looking for a cheap thrill would go elsewhere, more like a noughties version of a 1970's Mills n Boon that my mum would have read.

Good luck with the wardrode doors, I am building a cabin bed from ikea this Sunday. So if any of you guys can explain why I always have random spare parts left when I have built the thing please let me know. Its a bit like helping my son to build lego. Do they give bonus's to staff who add in sum extra bits or maybe I cant follow instructions!!

I love your reason for reading the book pq, made me giggle.

fizzy liz, good luck with the cabin bed. I'm sure they make the instructions hard to follow, to confuse, and to frustrate us. I found this when putting 1st wardrobe together. Should take two adults 2 and half hours, but it took me (on own, with 9 year olds help) 10 hours!!! Even then I'd forgotten one of the shelves, so had to undo some of it the next day, aarrgghh. The second wardrobe took me about 3 hours, and I did it MY way. As for extra pieces, I also find this. Again, trying to fool us maybe?? hehe.

Hope everyone has a good day today. It's a C day today, doing what he would like, which I'm sure will have something to do with Harry Potter!

Oh no not Barry again!  Undecided Actually we could do with that Barry Bucknell, anyone remember him? an older chap on TV who was a DIY expert. Anyone who puts together a flat pack has my admiration, when I bought bunk beds I said to the man in the shop I would only buy them if the guys who delivered them would also assemble them. And I also got to know a nice handyman who would do little jobs.

50 shades....well personally I feel quite uncomfortable about this book, having worked with so many people who have been sexually abused and women in controlling/abusive relationships, but each to their own and I know that the vast majority of people who read it are not thinking of it in that light...and I am particularly sensitive on that topic.

So, Sparkling, did you have a good birthday? Laughing

PQ yes it's Friday and I hope you can do a bit of relaxing over the weekend

Fizzy Liz, did you not know that it is Law of Nature that there will ALWAYS be some spare bits left over to confuse the poor householder? Wink

Hazeleyes, do I have to put my imaginary glasses on and ORDER you to have a holiday? heh heh Cool

Looby, hello, what's your news?

Hopeful and Shelleigh, how are you?

No Louise, you don't need the imaginary glasses, honestly!! I don't think I could physically do anything else, and my body is demanding that I stop. C has asked for a 'me' day, which means his day, so that's what we'll do. (might wipe the kitchen floor over though, very quickly mind) Harry Potter studio day is on 15th August, so that's something to look forward to as well. Wish the weather would warm up though!

Hope your friend is okay. Perhaps she could do some volunteering, rather than a full time job?

I am hoping it will stay dry going to visit a friend who has baby, we can then go to the park. Nice being able to get cuddles & then hand him back.

Louise your son will have great time & keep safe. I went to lots & lots of festivals pre child & a couple post. There are numpties (idiots) everywhere but you will have brought him up to have common sense.

A couple of wee tips to make festival experience more enjoyable.

slip in the following when hes not looking or give him the following:

packs of hankies & wet wipes (baby wipes too big n will get abuse from mates) & or hand gel in his stuff porta loos never have loo roll!!

Sun glasses n lotion (small bottles/pack).

And best thing ever, some folded black bin liners, make shift poncho when u put a hole in it, something to sit on when youre tired & of course shove your dirty gear in for you to fumigate when he gets back. The uses are endless.

Hope is dry for him, was not the first time I had the garden hose put on me pre admission to my house.

Oh the memories.

Ah Hopeful you have been watching the Olympics like me. I am loving it.

Fizzy Liz, THANKS SO MUCH for those tips, they are really helpful and I had not even sat down and thought what he could take, that advice is excellent and I will be acting upon it, I have never been to a festival, although I have been camping (hated it) but am sure he will really enjoy it. Mind you, I keep pulling his leg about the toilets and saying he should get an extra mega-cheap little tent as a toilet tent! He is going with one of his best friends, who is a really nice lad and is 20 so a bit more sensible.

I love the idea about hosing him down. My eldest's first job was in a wet fish shop, when he was 15. I use to make him undress at the back door and threw his clothes immediately in the washer. When he was a bit older he had a drunken night out, was sick into his SHOES in the taxi, sneaked round the back of the house at 5am, washed his shoes under the outside tap, left all his clothes in the back garden and crept into the house just in boxers. Oh the perils of being young!

I am sitting in bed with chronic backache. Can just about walk, let alone do anything else. It's not my normal osteo pain either, which makes me wonder what I've done exactly. Yesterday morning, I tried to put doors on wardrobes, but just couldn't do it. Me being me, refused to give up (even though still cannot do it). There are three doors, and don't seem to be able to line them up properly! Spent a few hours on these, and now I'm suffering big time. Have taken painkillers, but not even touched it. Hi hazeleyes, totally feel for you with your backpain. I suffer with my back too, although haven't had a flare up for well over 2 years now (she says touching wood!). Mine is always muscle spasm and it can be excrutiating, if it doesn't ease you really should think about calling the dr like louise said, they can prescribe you some valium which helps the muscle to relax, it may sound extreme but it works, and you ususally get over it quicker too.

Well my good intentions came to nothing as I got home from seeing my friend and thought I'd check up on the olympics to find Andy Murray just about to start his match, so all ideas of starting my bedroom were forgotten, but it was worth it as he got a gold medal yey!!!!Laughing

Happy Birthday Louise. I did put a thread up for you Smile Hope you're having a lovely day, you deserve every minute of it.

Weather is changeable at moment. One minute sun, then very cloudy and looking like rain. Back has eased quite a bit, and am moving around slightly. Not doing anything, cleaning wise in here, the bathroom is desperate, but can wait a day or two. Holidays are going quickly, and not taken C out at all. Feel guilty, but that's the way it is. Wish he would go into the garden, without me, but won't! Unless I push hiim out, what else can I do? Nothing!

pq, bedroom will always be there another day. You had a good day at least, which is the main thing. Hope the girls had good time with their dad.

Hi hazeleyes, eye laser itself wasn't painful, but the aftermath was, I wouldn't want to go through that again!! Although I know it will all be worth it! Glad to hear that your back has eased a bit. Just take it easy, you still have a few weeks to be the all singing, all dancing mumma you feel you ought to be!! Wink Try not to feel guilty, this holiday is about you just as much as it is about C.

Hi kiera - I didn't send you a message earlier! I am really surprised that a coachload of One Spacers didn't turn up at your door clammering for a share of your roast dinner! It sounded delish Wink. My brother is getting married on Aug 25th, so we too are wishing for good weather, my daughter and I are bridesmaids!!! But have decided as long as I have warm clothes, it will be FINE Cool
