6.12 – Time to reflect

We have already covered a lot of ground on the Confident Parenting Course. So far we have:

  • Identified and discussed our responsibilities as parents.
  • Recognised the rights and needs of parents and children in the family and how they can be met.
  • Discovered the importance of honesty, listening and offering choices.

We have also learnt about:

  • Children’s development, behaviour, techniques and strategies to cope with behaviour.
  • How children learn through everyday activities and how we support this.
  • How to get support for our family.

Finally we have also thought about:

  • Our own self esteem and our needs.
  • Our children’s self esteem and how to promote it.

Now we need to check that we understand it and can use it all practically on a daily basis.

We have created a check list of parenting techniques so that you can assess for yourself what you have learned and how you are using it or planning to use it. This will help you to see where you may need to go back and revise. It may also make it obvious to you how your children’s behaviour is or isn’t improving and support you to fill in any gaps.

For each of these techniques, write in your worksheet how you use this it:

  1. Helping with education.
  2. Listening.
  3. Talking about difficult issues.
  4. Honesty.
  5. Being honest with the children.
  6. Offering choices.
  7. One-to-one time.
  8. Being a role model for behaviour.
  9. Positive attention and praise.
  10. Ignoring / distracting / praising.
  11. Giving clear instructions.
  12. Negotiating.
  13. Teaching and rewarding.
  14. Star charts.
  15. The Thinking Space technique.
  16. Avoiding arguments.
  17. The effects of physical punishment.
  18. Everyday learning.

Look back at the previous sessions and have another go at anything you’re not confident with.
