5.11 – Negotiation scenarios 2

Look at these two scenarios. What negotiation can you use for Marta and Satyajit? In your worksheet write three things you would do and say in each.

1. Taxi service: Marta is 15 and wants a lift (either in the car or walking safely over) to her friend’s sleepover.

2. Personal Shopper: Satyajit is 17, he has asked if you would mind buying some pizza for him and two friends to share while they test drive the game that he got for his birthday.

Journal/Diary entry

Think about what you want your children to do and how you might negotiate with them. Use your journal to remind yourself of what you need them to do and what you can use as bargaining power. Tip! If in your family, your children do not have to ask to use the TV, the games console, phones, go out to play or ask you for your help with something, it may be worth re-thinking your house rules. If you want to negotiate you might need a little bit more control over certain things. Don’t be upset if things get slightly worse before they get better – this is natural, the kids will be thinking that you’ve gone all weird but they’ll get used to it!
