3.16 – Being honest with our children – scenarios

Look at the following scenarios. Choose two scenarios from the list below. Then answer the following questions:

  1. How old is your child?
  2. How would you be honest with your own child in this situation?
  3. Why is it important to be honest?
Scenario
1. It’s all about the money! Your child wants to go on a school trip which is quite expensive. How would you explain honestly that you can’t afford it this time?
2. Feeling under the weather: You have been feeling a little bit low and depressed for a few days. You haven’t quite been yourself and your child wants to know what’s wrong.
3. Serious illness: Your child has overheard a conversation you were having with a friend about a neighbour who is seriously ill. How would you explain it honestly for each age group that your children come under?
4. Single parenthood: Your child comes home from school upset and tells you that their friend has said, “You don’t have a mum/dad.”

When we are honest with our children they learn to be honest with us. They also understand things better and will be confident that they can trust you.
