Hi I'm sure this may already have a post but if it does I can't find it so sorry if this is a repeat. I'm just wondering what is the best way to treat head lice this is the first time my son has had them and I don't really want to use chemicals unless I really have to. Many thanks

Hi Zippy

conditioner left in a keep combing - there are some non chemical treatments but with my daughter conditioner was they only thing that worked but she did have very long hair. Have you tried to google it?

Good Luck

Hi zippy, as Hopeful said i have always added tea tree oil to conditioner and combed with one of those nit combs everyday until there gone, they usually recommend about doing this for upto 7 days, but there are other methods you can look at this NHS link and this Bupa one for further information on treating headlice.

be very careful with tea tree oil if you have pets as Ive seen the most awful thing happen to a friends cat after it coming into contact with it x

Hello zippy

Just to add, I dont know how long your boy's hair is but I found it always helped to keep my boys' hair short so they were a bit less likely to catch them

Hi Louise It is fairly short I'm a bit reluctant to have it much shorter than it is as I think it suits him. Plus having it shaved would make him look more like his dad :-)

Yes, I didn't mean shave it! I just know it is harder for girls as they tend to have longer hair. Once you have got rid, you can put a drop or two of teatree oil on the crown of his head as a deterrent too.

Thank goodness for that Louise. I know some parents like to shave their children's heads but its not for me. Like everything in life it's each to their own. I know when I was at school my mum always wanted me to have my haircut so it was shorter but I refused right up untill being 16 then wanted nothing more than short hair :-) will try the teatree oil when we've got rid of the critters

My boys got them over a year ago now and passed them onto me, horrible things, make me itch just thinking about them.  Since then I have used Vosene kids  3 in 1 head lice repellant shampoo, it doesn't smell too good, but it seems to do the trick (touch wood anyway).

Ladies the best way to kill lice on your own hair is dye it - Zippy I love your comment about looking like his dad - my son never had a hair cut until he was 9 when his dad left they had matching shaved cuts - i cringe now. Now every 4 weeks hes off for a proper trim he looks sooooo much better and sooooo much NOT like his dad (i use the word dad very losely)

Head lice are the bain of my life. My youngest has them pretty much permanently as there is someone in her class who doesn't have them treated. I have tried every shop bought potion going and to be honest they don't work. I buy the cheapest conditioner and comb the hair with a nit comb as often as I can. I have also had them which is really embarasing when your hairdresser points it out Surprised

I think my son only had them once, but he has really short hair, now the girls (with really long hair) had them constantly, it was a bit of a situation like yours PQ where one of the parents was not checking or treating.

It is really embarrassing when you get them yourself and don't know, mine was quite a funny story though and the reason i had not twigged that i had them was because i have a really dry scalp and it is naturally quite itchy most of the time, anyway long story short i developed a rash on my arm (on bend by elbow) that nothing seemed to get rid off not even the stuff the doctor gave me, friend found the headlice in my hair, i  got treated and rash on arm went, turns out they were bitting my arm in the night whilst i slept causing the rash.
