Nits!!!!

littleangel
DoppleMe

I know its not everyones favourite topic but I have had it with them!!!!

Ever since my daughter changed schools in October she has come home with nits practically every week!! They are driving me insane. Because she is mixed race and has a mass of hair it is not the easiest task getting them out and I am doing this almost daily!

I have twice spoke to the school (as have others) but they keep reiterating that it is no longer their policy to send out letters when there is a nit infestation??!!! Apparantly on the advice of the medical experts they stopped doing it because it causes over - cautious parents to "over treat" their childs hair leading to other problems... Am at my wits end.

I know how to get rid of them (have it down to a perfect science now) but does anyone know how to prevent them coming in my childs hair? I do send her in to school with her hair up in a plait but by time I pick her up she has had it out whilst playing "princesses" grrrrr!

I know! The boys weren't so bad, I could just cut their hair quite short and that helped, but my daughter was an absolute nightmare! x

I have heard tell (old wives' tale) that a drop or two of tea tree oil on the top of the head each day (on the crown towardsthe back) can be very effective, worth a try, and have a word wtih your GP the next time you are there?

It was awful with my lot in primary school.  And I did blow my top when my daughter came home from school after summer holidays with them.

Surely summer holidays is THE time to make sure that every parent in the land de-nits their child/ren??  Nits could be extinct within a six week time frame laugh

I bought a gallon bottle of cheap conditioner and smothered the childrens hair in it and combed through morning and night.  I found that even with the chemical stuff that you'd see the nits doing front crawl or back stroke in it - it never seemed to  kill them anyway.

I have to say that my lot loved watching them swim in the water as I'd rinse the comb in the sink cheeky where as I just felt sick thinking about these things crawling in their hair.

My younger two had white blonde hair when they were little and you could see the blighters running through their hair, yet trying to find the things...  Vile things.

As you can see I hate the things.

My daughter used to have long hair, but the comb did shred her hair and she had it cut short.

Thanks for the suggestion Louise, I'll try it, Cant hurt.

Sparkling, I long gave up paying £11 a time for them nit lotions coz they dont even work. I do the conditioner comb through but because littleangel has such thick curly hair it can take two hours a time frown.

I also hate them and every time she gets them my head immediately starts itching and I get uber paranoid and have my sister check my hair constantly lol

Lilliful (not verified)

I have heard that pure tea tree oil is the only thing that kills them straight away. I have also heard that if you put a few drops of tea tree in the Bath with her, it gets in the skin and the nits dont want to know!!

Hi littleangel - ahh the dreaded nits! I have tried everything under the sun when it came to nits!

My daughter has thick hair, curly hair and we used to get through hundreds of nit combs! I would spend a couple of hours every night going through her hair and in the holidays I would get completely rid of them, then, like sparkling, get her home the first day back and she would be crawling again. We tried tea tree, vinegar, conditioner, washing it everyday, not washing it for a month, then I found the solution! I went to Barcelona on holiday and bought some stuff over there, it smelt major chemically, but it got rid of them and they never came back! smiley So save those pennies and visit Barcelona and zap the hell out of those *******!

Nits!

Comb olive oil through their hair give them tinfoil hats and leave them for a couple of hours, wash and condition and run the nit comb through, do this once a week for three weeks, I do it on a Sunday, nit comb and wash their hair once or twice during the week. That get's rid of them!

Untill they get them again : )

Both my children are mixed race and have long past the sholder hair, it's thick and it's curly and head lice are a pain. Olive oil not only makes it easy to comb but it makes it all soft and shiny after it's been washed and conditioned.

Head lice have a two week cycle, from egg to egg laying adult, nit combs don't get rid of the eggs so you have to keep killing the babies before they mature... at least that's how I understand it.

Head lice have been living in our hair since before we stood up on two feet and walked out of the jungle onto the plains. They have been evolving with us, and recent studies have sugested that they play a part in imunising us from other parasites, namely body lice which spread things like Typhus and other deadly deseases.

If you shaved the hair of everyone in the world for a month then maybe you could eradicate them but then who knows what nasty things we might start catching : )

Here is an interesting read... the link is to a .pdf

Hey Bubblegum, Happy Easter to you smiley How are things going? How's the children? Sorry, won't be clicking on the link this time, nits have got to be the worst things going, just the word makes me start scratching, yuk!!

I brought a spray in Morrisons, (can't think of the name). Used to spray it on every two days, and C's not had them since. He's only ever had them twice since Reception, so I guess he's been lucky. Whether the spray actually worked though, not sure, although his friends had them, and he didn't, so......

I've also heard of hairspray doing the trick too, as the little blighters aren't supposed to cling on, as hairspray of course is too sticky!!

We are fine, they are growing up and developing their own oppinions (the buggers) my son is the worst, he regularly roles his eyes and has an answer for everything and apparently knows everything and everything he doesn't know is of no consequence, he is highly amusing : )

They still regularly make me laugh and keep me happy and I still love being a single parent/referee.

Right now we have converted my bedroom into a computer room, put all our computers in there networked (I've now been religated to sleeping downstairs on the futon* that was in my bedroom) and we've been spending lots of our time killing zombies in multiplayer Left for Dead 2... and other games probably inapropriate for their age.

There are no pictures of nits in the link, just and interesting read.

The older they get the more I realise that they are very much like me in temperment and personality... dunno if that's a good thing : )

*We have a futon because we are posh!

Later.

Count me in for Barcelona Hopeful - always! cool

Hi Bubblegum, long time no see! Great to hear that you and yours are doing well. We never thought you were anything other than posh you know, so we always expected a futon somewhere in your abode! wink

With both your children having long hair I bet nits have been a nightmare, although it sounds as though you dealt with it very practically.

If you are downstairs where are the children sleeping? I thought you all bunked together in your bed? Or have they grown out of that phase?

Interesting that you recognise that your children are similar in temperament and personality! Does that work for you or does it wind you up?

It winds me up Anna! : )

Kind of! they are growing up and developing their personalities and oppinions which are starting to differ from mine, up untill about five their whole world was me and so most of what they got was how I see things.

I don't mind or anything and it's wonderfull to watch, just sometimes conversations go round and round in circles and my fourty five years of experience means nothing to them as it meant nothing to me when I was their age and so most of the time I have to refrain from saying the things that my parents said to me about age and experience and you'll understand one day, or when you've lived as long as me.. etc, etc.

They are just being normal kids and I'm being a normal dad... you can't go out like that!

We all now sleep on the Fouton in the front room and go to sleep watching films. No they havent grown out of that fase : ) Here they are!

Nits are a constant pain, over the last few years they have been nit free for at the most maybe six months, they come from my daughters class as she generaly get's them first and if I don't catch it then my son and if I don't catch that then me. I've come to this conclusion as when I start scratching and I check them my daughter is always far more infested than my son or me.

I stayed in Barcelona for a while once during my youthfull hippy traveling days just off Las Ramblas in a hostel that doubled as a brothel. It's very beautifull! like lots of Spain is : )

Anyone interested in Spain should maybe read Homage to Catalonia, it's good, I enjoyed it anyway.

Your previous post Bubblegum was just like reading about C. Knows everything!!! As for still bunking in with you. Up until a little while ago, C started going into his own bedroom, and totally loved it. I never pushed him into moving out from me, as I knew when he was ready, he'd be off. About 5 weeks ago, I had an operation, so had my sister stay with me. C kipped in with me, and now I cannot get him out again!!!!!

Sometimes mine get all adventurous and independent and spend the night in their own room or camped in some other room in the house. A few weeks ago I woke up in the morning and found my son asleep on the landing all wrapped up in his quilt : )

I'd also love to have been able to stop the clock when C was a certain age. It's sad to see them growing so quickly, and yet, it's great that they can begin to learn some independance.

You've done great Bubblegum, despite the court stuff smiley

I bet you have some wonderful conversations around your kitchen table bubblegum and long may it last!

Maybe sometimes you can agree to disagree rather than getting into 'I am right' mode?!

I just tell my lot I'm perfect... angel

I find I'm enjoying them getting older, but to be honest I believe that is down to the fact I'm so limited with what I can do now.  We had so much fun when they were little, and its so lovely when you hear them talk about things we did - reletively free stuff like picnics on the beaches and various play grounds and watching aircraft in RAF Valley.

I miss them wanting to come with me, but then I can't play football or frisbee now, so its not fun for them.

Sparklinglime! My dad used to take me to watch planes at Valley when they used to have those display days in the 80s, we used to go into the dunes across the river from Rhosniger and watch the display for free : )
