What do you do??

princess

Hi everyone!

Was just reading a few of the posts, and was wondering what skills we have between us? Apart from the obvious.. being parents! :D

I kind of thought that each of us will probably have some useful info that could help each of us out, I noticed that Fi works in education and gave us some excellent info that maybe one of us could use in the future!
I'm not really anything special, I work as a support worker for people, atm supporting a lovely lady with a brain injury, have been with her for 4 years, and have built up a wonderful friendship.. ( yes I'm not supposed to get involved, but hey I'm human :D )
I also worked with womens aid as a volunteer for a while. Its the 2nd time I have been a lone parent.

Thats a bit about me... Oh and I'm 40! wise old bird

Lets here about you..... ;)

Well, I currently work for Woolworths, nothing exciting just shelf filling. I've been there almost five years. Before I had children I was an accounts clerk for a family run stationery business. I have also worked as a home help and a freelance dressmaker.

I want to get better qualified so I can get a decent job with a decent wage to support my kids and myself without having to claim income support. I'm about to start an ECDL course.

ECDL is a good one to have under your belt - should open up all sorts of possibilities for you. Good luck! Fi x

I have two jobs.....I am a community development worker, which is my main job. My second job is playscheme coordinator, both are with the council.

I'm just starting my second year with the Open University, so I'm also a part time student studying from home.

The best job I have though is being a momma.

ECDL is a good course...can open up quite a few possibilities, I know that in the council one of the main requirements for a job in administration is ECDL or equivilant.

Good luck chic. How are you finding it??

Hi lovelysb

Welcome to One Space! Its great to see that we have such a great team here on our site, I hope you enjoy using it!? You sound like you are incredibly busy, but I agree, being a mum is the best job there is!

Thought I'd add my bit to this topic!

I run programmes for women who have experienced domestic violence and want to understand more about it.
I run violence prevention parenting programmes which look at gang and drug behaviour within families and the community, which was originally written in America and has now been brought to England by the Race Equality Foundation.
I also do workshops with women of different faiths and none, who are interested in developing relationships that build community cohesion.
And I am the online parenting support worker for One Space!

Oh and I am a mum of a teenager! :)

Hi jennywren

Well done you for your design. You go right ahead and blow your own trumpet! No one else is going to do it!

Soon we are going to have a place where all our parents can do exactly that, so in the next month or so, you will be able to upload your design and share it with others on this site.

I look forward to seeing it! :)

Good morning all!!

I guess to all the exciting jobs on the list I will add my dull boring job. I am a welder and I work full time at Land Rover. I have been there 14 years (went in on a 6month contract :? ). Even thought I find my job boring at times and so repetative the wages help enough for me to carry on giving my children the standard of life before I got divorced.
I have been fishing on line for volunteer jobs or work experience as I would like to work with women, be that domestic abuse, counselling or anything along them lines.
If there is anyone out there with some advice would love to hear from you.

Thanx

Hi Bkaur04, I'm guessing your from Birmingham?? There is defo somewhere you could carry out voluntory work. Based on what you have written off the top of my head I would recommend that you contact a charity called 'Womens Aid'. They are a national charity. I have been on a couple of training sessions with the Birmingham and Solihull branch.....really informative!! Here's there website, Call your local branch and discuss if there is any chance you could be a volunteer if they can't help, then ask if there is anywhere they could recommend. Hope this helps.

Hi layla, there are so many opportunites for adults, have a look at this link from DirectGov: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning/index.htm

It gives information on choosing the right course, careers advice, grant information, childcare cost information and so much more!

There is also Learn Direct http://www.learndirect.co.uk/, that gives you the opportunity to learn from home.

Have a look and let us know if it was useful. :)

workinslippers

Hi,

I'm new on here, I live in the Lake District and have 3 children and have been single parenting full time for about 10 years. The hardest thing has been keeping all the balls in the air without having a breakdown. I was working away from home a lot and hated leaving the kids so last July I gave up my day job and then I found an online business opportunity and it is much better. Am determined to achieve financial and time freedom. I have had a lot to learn, so had my head stuck in the laptop, but never mind, at lease I can be home.

I also do a lot of charity work, I provide them with a Yahoo search box that makes money for the charities when they go online. This is very rewarding as there are a lot of charities who struggle to do get the funds to do the good work they need to.

Would love to hear more about you!

hello work in slippers

Aha now I understand your user name. How enterprising you have been to find something you can do without working away from home! More and more jobs seem to be online. My work is online about half of the time so I have a pair of slippers too! You live in a lovely part of the country so I hope you are able to get enough time to get out and about as well.

Take care

Hi Workinslippers
Good to meet you on Onespace - how did you hear about this site?
I too have my slippers on and do a fair bit of selk employed work at home as well so good to have you joining the ranks! It sounds like you have been very broad thinking in your approach to bringing up your children, work life balance and finances etc which is a real inspiration to others! I am keen to hear more about the charity stuff you mentioned as I am involved in a charity that works with disabled children in India as well as my son's PTA, both of which could benefit from the link you mentioned. How does it work?
How has your half term been going?
Hope to hear back from you real soon.
