Treasure Hunt

I was listening to the radio and a man had written in asking for cheap things to do with the children over the summer. One listener suggested a treasure hunt and theirs was to be undertaken on a bus trip round the city so it wasn't the sort where you find a place suggested in a clue and then you find the next clue, it was more of a quiz: what colour is the door on the Barclays Bank? how many windows are there in the side of St Peter's church? etc.

I was thinking the quiz idea could be adapted to any age of child and to either walking, on a bike or on the bus, depending on where you live. You, as the long-suffering parent, have to do the route first of course to set the questions. You could also compile a wet weather one based on your own home: what is in the picture in the hall? How many rooms does our home have? measure how long the sofa is etc.and have it as a standby for a desperate day in the holidays when they are really fed up.

I'm pretty sure I always mention this when ever I get the chance but... WILD CAMPING! it's free!

Obviously not possible in built up areas as the police will take you away if they find you camping in the park, but here in North Wales there are loads of places off the beaten track where few people go : )

My kids love going to the swings, local play parks, they can spend an hour there. we can spend a day with a picknick doing a tour them on scooters me on foot of the five parks we have here in our village.

We are lucky to live by the beach too, that's free as well, beach combing for shells and what ever the sea has washed up and let them build stuff, mine like to build little kingdoms with villages and castles and little people and monsters and what not, they are into zombies at the moment and star wars so they play imaginary games with rocks and shells and sand... and it's FREE!!

We sometimes get a family bus ticket and go visit places for the day, take a picknick. This summer we are going to do that with our tent and go visit old friends of mine round North Wales.

Hi Louise I like the idea of the treasure hunt, good idea! I am racking my brains for other exciting things to do, but I just keep thinking of the Family Capsule, we have buried in the back garden, I must remember it, if and when, I ever move!

bubblegum, when my daughter was small we started making small villages in the sand, it is SOO much fun, far more interesting than a castle and you don't need a bucket and you can use reeds and stray twigs or leaves to great effect!

How long are you off for in your tent?

Will try the treasure hunt, have been promising a trip on the open top bus ( or the sunny bus as it has now become known by my 2 yr old, on account of me saying we had to wait for a sunny day, damn this heatwave! now i say its too sunny!)

That's very witty, smellie. I don't really like calling you smellie, by the way, as I am sure you are not! I might just call you S.

You mean you have to plough through them all? When I log on and click on each forum, eg Separation and Divorce, it tells me how many new posts have been added to each thread but yes, you do have to remember which ones you have been involved in. I guess you would like the facility to be able to "bookmark" certain threads so you could easily return to them?

Dear people of One Space, we in the office are working long and hard to re-create our old fab forums, including smileys, obvious new messages and to be notified when someone responds to our posts, amongst many other things.

We are a very small team and are passionate about providing a great service, please bear with me, as our forums are my greatest passion of all and will not let it lie until I have them as we all wish!

Anyway, this is completely diverting off topic! - Treasure Hunts......

On birthdays, I hide all my daughters presents around my bedroom, so that when she wakes me up I can sit in bed and watch her search around my room, telling her hotter and colder!  She loves doing it, even now!  Although she knows where all the sneaky hiding places are, behind the radiator, above the door frame, on the window sill. Just have to remember how many there are and don't stumble across anything months later!!
