Slow Cooker

Had this link about recipes for the slow-cooker.

I couldn't see the cooking thread (there was one, wasn't there?) to put it in.

Please feel free to move it :D

I've been assured it's brilliant - but I've not looked yet.

I've also been told that you can't roast in it, meat needs to be covered with gravy or water... (or wine?!)

Hi Sparklinglime
Cheers for that. I don't have one but I sure it will be very useful for those that do.

Hi sparkling lime

Yes I always cook the stuff in water in mine, that does mean that for such as spag bol, I would have to cook the mince and onions in it and have to drain it then the meat is ready for other ingredients, and would therefore have to be put in a different pan, so I am not very keen on doing such dishes in it, it is better for whole pieces of meat....and the wine would go mostly down the drain so I will stick to water and have a glass of wine with my meal instead :D . My friend said that her auntie used to cook a whole (small!) chicken in hers.

You mentioned a link, I don;t know if it is my computer but I didn't see the link, will you have another go please, as I would like to see this?

Thanks ladies, both sites look good, I like the idea of lasagne in the crock-pot! and strangely enough it does not need a load of liquid. The other site mentions cooking wild birds and game, that sounds very posh. Has anyone ever eaten game? I had a game pie once (ex father in law fancied himself as a bit of a conisseur) but I hated it......what do you think?

I'm sort of vegetarian (very fussy, my would say!) as a lot of foods make me ill.

My Mum and Dad never had game, so it isn't something I'd consider cooking...

Isn't that an awful way to describe it... game...

First visit to a rather posh girlfriends house when I was about sixteen and her dad gave me a pheasant, he said 'I shot it my self' which made me feel a bit nervous, but I gave it to my dad and he cooked it and it was rather nice. When we were kids if my dad saw any sort of living creature cross the road he would put his foot down and try to run it over, we ate lots of rabbits and pheasants as kids.

Only thing with road kills is when you cook them there are always splintered bones, that's what I remember most about rabbit stew, pieces of bone.

I ate Zebra once, tasted nothing like chicken, ate snake too, also tasted nothing like chicken and various bugs and insects, none of them as horrible as you might think, though the zebra was a bit off and had been curried to disguise the fact.

I bought a take away Piella once, I spoke minimal Spanish at the time and I sometimes suspect the chap was having a laugh with me but when I got it home and opened it there was basically a rabbits head sat on a bed of rice all cooked with no eyes waiting to be eaten.

Hi Bubblegum
Before I read your post, I was just about to make myself some lunch, but rather think I'll pass on that now (Yuk)!!!
I'm afraid I'm a boring person, and stick to 'normal' things, chicken, beef, lamb, pork etc.
Have heard Kangaroo is delicious, but wouldn't try that myself.

Bubblegum, you would be good on 'celebrity get me out of here'.

My local butcher does venison and pork sausages, they are very nice, when you cook them virtually no fat comes off them they are very lean, lovely. I tell my kids they are Rudolf Sausages and as I'm putting them into my mouth I go .. no no don't eat me ahhhhhh or hum jingle bells, stuff like that.

Hahahahaha!!!

I remember when my eldest asked if bacon was pig - I said yes, and was expecting a reaction, but he wasn't bothered.

Once ate frogs legs - very like chicken but not very meaty - all bones. I have eaten kangaroo and also ostrich - prefer chicken! I didnt like the sound of the rabbits head in the paella they must have been takingthe rise.

My brother once went to China to work training the Chinese to make some components. He stayed in an area where they didnt see many western folk and the first night in the restaurant all the family trooped into the dining area to look at the stranger (my brother). Then they brought in a four tiered dish with this gigantic fish flopping over the sides. They smiled and nodded a lot and so did my brother - then they took the dish away and the next thing the first course arrived - the head of the big fish RAW with the eyes and everything. My brother gulped and though how the hell am i going to get away with not eating this without offending them - he took a few forkfuls and then put his cutlery down. They removed the fish remains and the rest of the meal was great. My brother still wonders if he was meant to eat the raw fish or just admire it.

Chines food is still my favourite but i now avoid ordering any fish dishes. :D

Just last week I was trying to explain 'pigs might fly' my daughter said something during one of those one up manship games her and her brother are always having of late, is it just mine? they always end in some sort of ridiculous outrageous lie... anyway... she said something and I said oh look a that pig flying over there, pointing behind her, I then had to explain.

Your bacon made me think about it.

Sorry if I have said this before, but my son's friend and his family have bought one of those micro pigs as a pet, it is so gorgeous and is house-trained! I am a bit concerned about whether it is cruel to keep it like that but it seems happy enough.

Oh heck... That's not nice.

I have another chicken casserole in the pot. I'm so adventurous.

Hope your casserole was nice, sparkling :) It must be hard to find something all four of them like? I know as my eldest will be home in a few days, I will have to put a bit more thought into the menu. I am guessing you have casseroles a lot? It sounds a sensible idea with five to feed

Yes, we do have loads of casseroles and currys. I do a load in the hope that some will last into the next day for the older two to have some more.

I'm meant to have a day off today - I've had three phone calls so far to go and type a letter **sigh**

Sigh indeed.

That's a good idea to make extra for the next day. I'm going to take a leaf out of your book, whilst my eldest is here he is working some days and will need a packed tea etc.

Hope you get some "you" time today before the school holidays hit!
