How to holiday as a single parent!!

Hi there

Easter hols are upon us and summer hols are looming. I am really keen for us to share how we holiday as a single parent.

Some of us are old hands at holidaying alone with our children and thoroughly enjoy it, please share your experiences here, so people newer to this game can learn from it and realise that although the world out there might seem like happy families and loved up couples, but taking the right holiday alone with your children isn't as challenging as they might think.

Some people on this site have gone to single parent package holidays
- Was it fun? Was it expensive?

Some people just step onto the cheapest flight and go from there!
- How was that, scary? Nerve racking? Lonely?

Some save the newspaper vouchers and get cheap holidays in England
- What are they like? Do you meet other single parents?

Where to holiday, top tips for holidaying alone, how to get the most out of your holiday, cheapest way to obtain a holiday, I want to hear it all!

Been a single parent now for over 5 years so that adds up to quite a few holidays! The first time I ever took the girls away on my own was to a Haven site where there was a tent already set up and I basically kept my head down all week and read piles of books and drank coffee while they played in the ball pit (it was raining most of the time!)

I've also done quite a lot of camping holidays - relatively cheap and the kids can help put the tent up - great fun in sunny weather but the past few summers we've had have soured me on that. This summer I've booked to go abroad with the kids for the first time - because I booked well in advance I got one free child place - although it was still more than I've ever spent on a holiday!

My top tip for cheap places to stay would be to keep an eye on the Travelodge website. If you book far enough in advance and are flexible about where you stay you can get family rooms for £19 a night. That can be a great option for exploring new places. If you get Tesco Clubcard vouchers or anything similar, they can be used for lots of visits when you're holidaying in the UK. And don't forget that anything that's part of the National Museum of Wales is free entry - plenty of sites around Cardiff. St Fagans is brill!

I think it was camping holidays with my girls that made me realise how great it was to be a single mum. One time on a cold, windy Devon campsite I heard all these 'proper' families sniping at each other around us and me and my girls were just having a chilled time and making the best of it. Holidays are definitely better when there isn't another adult to fight with! Fi xx

Well I've always had to have help with my two on hols, well with my 4 y/o mainly. So have holidayed with my mam.
Though last year we did venture to W  ales to a Haven site. It was grand, prepared at leats 2 wks in advance lol
We met some nice families there, and kids being kids made friends too, so it was easier to chat to other parents.

Hi there, thanks for sharing that. £19 for family room sounds fantastic, thanks for that info.

Fi you said last year you wanted to go somewhere hot and dry, where are you going? How long for? Where are you staying? Hotel or apartment? How exciting it is? I bet the kids are dead excited too!

I'm going to Malta, thanks, Anna. Straight after we break up for the summer hols from school and I do mean straight after! It's going to be a case of bombing up the motorway to Birmingham airport the minute school finishes! Can't wait :D Fi x

BRILLIANT!! I am excited for you. Leaving straight after school makes it double exciting for the kids as well, eeek!! I hope you get some good pics for the Family Quilt too!?

Funnily enough, I was thinking of you only this morning, we have not heard much from you recently, I hope all is well? Any news on that photo :?: :?: !!

Hope you have some fun things up your sleeve for easter? Any egg hunts or egg rolling - we used to do that when we were small, but I have no idea what it really is, any guesses?
