Free laptops update

harissa

The original thread won't let me post, so apologies for stating a new thread.

Crumbs, it is now 26th April and we STILL don't have the laptop. Home Access did respond fairly quickly to the application forms and, within a couple of weeks, notified us that our claim had been successful. Then it all started to unravel in the typical bureaucratic mess all to familiar to me.

To get the laptop, I need to have in my possession 3 things:
1-The entitlement letter
2-The pin number notification
3-The Home Access Barclaycard (presumably a giftcard loaded with up to £400)

None of them arrived within the 10 day specified time scale and I began to panic that our grant would expire BEFORE we received the 3 required items. This is still a possibility as we are now 1 month down and have 2 months left. In any case, it seems unlikely that my son will benefit from the scheme during the current academic year.

All received paperwork initially had our correct details and postcode. Then I noticed that the entitlement letter had a completely different postcode. They had to restart the process from scratch and mail out a correct one. Then we received the pin number with the wrong postcode - showing that the Home Access computer system had reverted to the incorrect details...groan! We're still waiting for the Card, which should have arrived last week but apparently there has been "an unexpected delay"

I have been in constant telephone communication with their helpline and, to their credit, the people at the other end do seem fairly switched-on.

Watch this space...

This is so frustrating, harissa, and as you say the whole point is for your son to be able to use it for his studies and the academic year will be over by the time he gets it!

I may sound like a Luddite, but sometimes I think that technology does not make our lives easier at all, just even more complicated.

Keep phoning them, harissa, at the very least they will get it sorted out so they can stop you phoning all the time.

Has anyone else had more success with getting one?

Hi harissa, i agree with Louise....how frustrating.... It is good to read however that the people you are talking to you seem to be switched on.

Hopefully if anyone else is having any problems they can leave a message on these boards and you now being an expert you could help them!

Bad luck harissa, but keep fighting for it, I look forward to hearing of the arrival!

C...... goes into year 3 in September, so I think I might give them a ring in the Summer holiday to see if I can get the ball rolling. What is the paperwork that is required Harissa? Think I ought to start digging that out now, as it could take me weeks/months!!!

If a governments scheme is failing, it is worth contacting your MP.

It's what they are for.

Keep trying.

Just phoned Barclaycard to ask why I still haven't received the grant card. They didn't know! :oO

However, on checking their records, it became clear that Home Access still hadn't notified them electronically of my correct postcode and this invalidated the PIN number which had been sent out. Even if I'd received a card it would have been invalid! I was then told to phone Capita to ask Capita to contact Barclaycard. Only problem was that the phone number I was given was actually the phone number I was already connected to.

Eventually I managed to get back to Home Access and got a woman who apologised, saying that none of this should have happened. Basically their computer system should automatically have sent out an electronic update to Barclaycard but, inexplicably, had failed to do so. She had to get her supervisor to fill in an escalation form to get Barclaycard notified and to get my grant revalidated as legitimate.

I now have to phone Barclaycard in a few days to check that the electronic notification has worked and that the new PIN and card is on its way.

I then have until 16th June to use it or lose it! I applied way back in February!!

Well, what a learning curve, eh? The added complication is that I am completely deaf in one ear and have limited hearing in the other. This has made extended telephone communication extremely taxing and has proved to me that there is NO WAY that would I be able to hold down an office job...so I'm now going to stop applying for them!

Good grief, you have had so much hassle about this, harissa, I truly hope you get it in the end.

I can understand what you mean about the long phone calls and this must have felt as frustrating as the whole laptop business.

Hi harissa, thanks for keeping us updated! Well done for keeping on top of it all and not giving it up!

Fingers crossed that you receive the PIN number and card shortly :)

What a mess! I've done what Home Access suggested and phoned Barclaycard on their premium rate number (10p per minute for 11 minutes). Guess what? Barclaycard STILL have not been notified of my correct details and told me to phone Home Access again.  I have now done this so many bl**dy times, I've lost count. At least the 0333 number is free, otherwise I'd have already paid for the laptop in phone charges by now.

Write to your MP.

This is a government scheme, I think, so they should get things moving.  They still need people on their side incase all these discussions lead to another general election, so they should act quickly.

Point out its flaming premium rate calls too.  They're such a disgrace aswell.

I always admire your persistance Harissa.  I give up too quickly.

I have to wait after a phone call to allow my hearing to recover sufficiently before phoning again - what a drag! It has been one of those mornings where I've had to phone the Job Centre, a hospital re my neurology appointment and various government agencies re the ESA and medical form. Arghhhhh! I'm so tired from all the having to concentrate on what non-visible people (easier to lip read/ read body language when person is physically in front of me) are saying, I could fall asleep right now.

Somehow I got back to Home Access, who confirmed they had sent the correct details to Barclaycard a week ago and that Barclaycard probably haven't got round to putting it through their system yet. So I'm back to phoning Barclaycard at the end of the week.

To be continued...

Oh good luck harissa, you will deserve your own version of Microsoft, never mind a laptop, when this is all resolved!

Unbelievably it has got even more cocked up!! This morning I received yet another wrongly-postcoded pin number from Barclaycard. A phone enquiry produced the answer that Home Access had sent them an email blocking and requesting the reissue of the card but, unfortunately, it had failed to notify them of the correct postcode.

Going round and round in circles and am extremely p*ssed off!!

I am not even going to bother phoning Home Access at this moment. Apparently my grant card should reach me by Monday (unless the Post Office send it all round the country as they did last time), and Barclaycard have suggested I simply give the wrong details when I attempt to collect the laptop. I run the risk of being humiliated in the shop and being barred from getting the bl**dy laptop  but...dammit!!!

So Monday is D-day? I am not surprised you have reached the end of your tether with this one, harissa. How ridiculous that you should co-operate with the wrong details!

The laptop situation is just going to drop down my list of priorities for now as, since my last post, ALL my benefits have been cut off!!!! :o(

I'll post in full on the benefit change section.

The card arrived TODAY!! The envelope was franked 16/5/2010 and addressed corectly to me but with the addition of Skelmersdale and a Skelmersdale postcode after Buckinghamshire. So now all that remains is for me to convince the supplier of laptops that Skelmersdale has relocated to Buckinghamshire ;o)

Am keeping everything crossed for you, harissa, not about the Skelmersdale relocation, but about getting the laptop at last!

Now to chose the laptop! Yet, after all that waiting, I'm taking my time hopefully making an informed decision.

Comet is the only supplier I have heard of and they offer just the one laptop
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/advice/902/Home-Access

It looks quite good, being bundled with MS Office and Windows 7 Professional. Not too sure about the 1 Gb memory, though. Would that be adequate for my son's heavy use of graphic design programs and his desire to learn animation and do video editing?

The Home Access spokeswoman did advise me to shop around and mentioned that some of the other suppliers also include printers and scanners as part of their package deal.

Has anyone else got equipment through this scheme and, if so, what did you chose?

I haven't, but I would agree that 1Gb is not very big. Most are 4GB. You can buy more memory to add on but I am not sure how expensive this is. Re Windows 7, I have heard from a vriety of sources how good they find it.

I got the Comet one as it could be collected from the store within half an hour of placing the order. All of the laptops offered by the Home Access scheme had just 1Gb memories apart from a few where you could pay extra to buy 1Gb more.

No problem with the postcode apart from the chap raising his eyebrow and saying it didn't look normal for around here.It all went through OK - phew!

I'm so worn out now, I'm not going to try out the equipment until my son is safely out of the house tomorrow. I want to make sure it is working properly before handing it over to him.

Laptop isn't quite working as expected because the Home Access equipment comes heavily laden with blocking and control tools which are switched on by default. Lots of howls of frustration from son, and myself as we weren't provided with passwords to access certain control panels. I've had to phone their technical advice lines to get one password only to find I need a different password to get into another part of the system and then have to phone another phone number. It is making things unusually difficult and expensive, even for me (and I'm the person my friends come to to get help!!) - lord only knows how a computer novice is expected to cope!

Still, it is a nice laptop and, once I've got all the spyware removed, it should work properly :o)

Alison, check that the scheme is still running in your area. When I picked up the laptop from Comet, the man said the scheme is to be discontinued here. I don't know whether he meant that Comet was withdrawing as a supplier or whether the Home Access Scheme itself had been pulled by the new Government. He said it had been very successful and that his branch  had been supplying on average 10 Home Access equipment packages a day, during the week I collected mine!

Hi harissa, I tried applying a few weeks ago, but it was a definate NO. Can't do it until September. I will ring again though at the end of July to see if they will at least send me the forms! Fat chance maybe, but can live in hope I guess.

Thanks for that link, sparkling lime.

So...the scheme ended officially this week and yet there is unclaimed money available on a first come first served basis. What is not clear at all is whether children going into the original designated yeargroup (like alisoncam's son) are now eligible. Maybe you need to give them a ring, alisoncam?

I did notice that the purpose of the scheme was to help families with no internet access at all, which is sort of ironic as I would imagine those who would be most keen would be those who had some access but knew they would really benefit from more, whereas people without  any access often need a lot more support to get online than just "here's a laptop"

I hope it will mean that more children can gain from it...  So much "unused" money seems to go back into the general pot.

How many without internet access would have known about this scheme, I wonder.
