Day one of half-term

I can see it's going to be a loooooooong week. :D

Last week had been a bit trying. I'm revising for my exam on 16 June (I'm so looking forward to 1.30pm that day 8-) ), and there had been loads of issues that I couldn't believe with Scouts! Everyone was rattled by that. Sorted though, and I've never had so many compliments thrown at me, I don't think ever. :)

So I thought Saturday I'll have a lie in.

The phone was ringing before 9am. Eldest wanted to go to the cinema with his mates. So that was £10 from my purse for the bus and getting in (he only had £5, doesn't go out often, so I'd feel mean if I said no. He's been working hard too with revising.)

The phone is then ringing at 9.20am. One of my youngest's friends asking if he wants to go swimming. Had to sort out swimming stuff, money (cafe after, cost me £5) and his membership card. Tantrums as his mate hadn't come to get him. So I figure I'll just get up at that point, furious because my son wasn't able to ask what time all this was happening, and because he was mumbling and I couldn't understand him. Anyway, his friends came with one of their mum's and he's gone off.

So, I know have 18p left in coppers in my purse. Bank funds are very low and I have to pay the DD for the electric, so can't really touch it anyway... And it's only Saturday.

Joy.

I hope everyone enjoys the bank holiday.

Not a bank holiday in Scotland. School open and i am still working :) Ours get a local holiday 1st June then one inservice day, then that is it till they finish beginning of July.

Trying to save before school finishes, but had to have new glasses today, almost £300. So robbing Peter to pay Paul

I hope that your week gets better and hopefully the sun will shine for you :)

You MIGHT be able to get your kids to go swimming for free. It is called the "Government Free Swimming Initiative" and means that across the UK many public pools have signed up to offer free sessions for under-16s and over 60s. Try googling to see which pools in your area are on the scheme. Fingers crossed! Saved us a small fortune already but we are lucky literally living across the road to the leisure centre. It makes a change actually being able to use the place at last!

On a different subject the changeover from weekly benefit payments to fortnightly payments hits next week, so be extra careful with your money as there will be a week with zero income coming up. I was too late to negotiate a loan so will be up s*it creek that week. Fortunately there are a couple of art gallery private views that week, so if all else fails we'll be dining out on free nibbles

The season of free open gardens is coming up and my son used to love noseying around other people's gardens in the nearby village. Especially the gardens with frogs and cats! The only expenses were possibly a donation for the village hall/church roof and maybe buying a homemade cake at a very reasonable price.

Have a good half-term everyone and hoping this lovely weather lasts!

Hello sparkling lime

It never rains but it pours....you see, it was cos you wanted a lie in....... :?

Talking of rain, I hope we dont get much and then the kids can at least get out and about at lower cost. I always thought we shoukd get more child benefit during school holiday weeks, after all they seem to eat more as well as want to do all these activities.

I'm sorry you missed the loan deadline Harrissa. That won't be easy.

I did get it in time, and the loan will be going in on Thursday. I have to be so strict, as after a load of car problems I do have bills to pay that I daren't miss. Trying to hold onto my credit rating...

The Council seem to save the free swimming for certain session in the summer holidays. They give a free membership card to all the children though so they can get cheaper rates for swimming and the other sports at the leisure centre.

I really agree with the extra child benefit idea with holidays. My lot have been like gannets this week. I bought 24 Cornets in a well known frozen food shop (£3.50... The ice cream van comes round, it's over £5 for a cornet for each of them!) on Wednesday. They've gone!! As has a packet of ham with 36 slices in, and two big boxes of Cornflakes!!!

They've had such a telling off! To be fair, a lot of it is eaten by my son with special needs. He could eat all day, is very tall - and very slim! He does have DLA, so I reckon that covers this, along with the new pair of shoes every month, and the new trousers...

:D

They're my life. While I moan, I hope I can give them a good holiday. So long as the housing benefit cheque goes in on time on Tuesday, I'll survive. My fingers are crossed. 8-)

(I do feel awful being in receipt of benefits. I did work full time though for 22 years. When I was married I worked 6 nights a week and a Sunday afternoon in a supermarket - and loved it. I did admin work a day a week too. I had to give up when we split up.)

Blimey sparkling lime I should think you had your hands full enough at the moment without worrying about work!

Re ice creams...you reminded me of when my youngest was pre-school. I used to buy packs of 10 choc ices, like you, to save on the cost. He knew he wasn't allowed to have one without asking...so he would wait till I was in the loo and then gobble one down. I would find the paper half-stuffed on the freezer shelf. I sometimes wondered if he put something in my cuppa to make me go to the loo more often

My eldest used to work part time at a supermarket. You could buy items very cheaply once they had reached their sell-by date. He once came home with 10 bags of bagels, with 6 per pack. I stuck all but one pack in the freezer. Over the coming week I ate 3 bagels, by which time I noticed they had all gone. So my boys ate 57 bagels between them in a week!!!!!! I had to start devising hiding places for food, which is Ok for biscuits but not for chilled stuff obviously. I often used to wish for a secret fridge in my bedroom ;)

Happy half term

They're very quick in being sneaky, aren't they?!!

I have a safe upsairs and downstairs that I put the chocolate in! I'd love to have one made of clear perspex so they could see what was in it ;)

I don't really need to stock up for the holidays now as the freezer shop is in our town. They've started on the apples and bananas today.

Glorious day here. First time we've had a warm day for ages.
