bed wetting

leefern

hey am wondering if anyone can give me any advice my little (well not so little anymore) girl is 5 and has just started school but every night unless i lift her to take her to the toilet after she has been sleeping an hour or more, which i have been doing, she wets the bed. ive tried stopping giving her a drink after a certain time, she always goes for a pee before bed. but nothing seems to make a difference. she has always drunk loads during the day from when she was a baby because up until she was a year old she was violiantly sick after ever feed.(didnt find out till i stopped her baby milk this is wht was causing it, even though i suggested this to my gp at the time and was assured this wldnt b the problem  ) she wasnt used to her stomach being full and compensated by drinkin lots of liquid.

a girl in my work told me today that her gp told her the worst thing you can do is lift them and take them for a pee, because this trains them to pee when there still half sleeping? so now im lost and i dont knw wht to do.

i asked my hv who said they wldnt see at as a problem till there 7 or older and jst tryin giving her less to drink, but when she's tellin me she wants a drink and shes thirsty what am i supposed to do say no ur not gettin a drink. it feels cruel

anyway al stop rambling any help wld b appreciated

Hi Leeanne
I went through a stage of bedwetting at the age of 5 too. My mum had just had a new baby and I had just started school. My mum used to wake me a few times before she herself went to bed. Eventually I did stop, but I think it took a good few months. I think it was all down to the big changes in my life. I used to sleepwalk too up til the age of 10. (Not connected of course).
Not really helped you here I'm afraid, but eventually it should stop.
Hope you are well.
Take care
Alison

My son has special needs, so his are, unfortunately, on-going.

Having discussed the situation with the enuresis clinic, and they said it is remarkably common even in older children.

Do talk to you GP if your worried though, as if it does persist though. I know it can be so frustrating with the bedding though...

Hi Leanne
Yes very definitely common when just starting school or through any times of change. However I'm sure that when my grandson started doing it and my daughter went to her GP they said to put him on the toilet before she went to bed so i think if what you're doing works then to carry on! My daughter whos just 4 always wakes about 4 am to go to the loo and shes still half asleep and I guess thats what we do too so it can't be that wrong!! Good luck x

Hello leefern

You will probably find that the professionals won't be concerned for another year or two. I can only tell you what worked for my son, who was still in night nappies at almost 6. We went to see the school nurse and she asked if any problems and he said "yes I still wear night nappies" (It sounded so weird that he could discuss it!) She said what time to do you have your tea? and he said 5 o'clock and she said well that can be your last drink of choice, just drink water after that. (A child will drink water if truly thirsty but not otherwise) He was cured very quickly. A star chart helped loads as well :D

Oh and by the way, if none of the suggestions we have made work, just don't worry about it, put her in Pull=Ups for another few months then try again, it is not worth getting stressed out about

Hi leefern

Its great that everyone is sharing their experiences, it seems that there is not too much to worry about at this age. It is just going to be another one of those things she will grow out of. You just need to find a routine that suits you and if that is taking her to the toilet an hour after she has gone to sleep, then thats what you will have to do for now. Here is a fantastic site for any further information on the subject http://www.eric.org.uk/

Let us know if you learn anything new from the site. My daughters friend wore pullups until she was about 11, as long as you show that it is fine and it doesn't bother you, then they will follow suit.

Hi all
I had an accident in the bed last night :o :o . My water bottle leaked  . I take one to bed for my back, and woke in the night, (thinking the worst).
