I made a phone call to South Gloucestershire council to arrange 'free' collection of some furniture and I was asked which benefits I claim as there are only 4 benefits that qualify for free collections (3 per year) which, I might add is stopping on 31st March and we all have to pay 50% costs of £21. No more free collections for benefit claimants after this date. I told her I was receiving housing benefit, child tax credit(not working) child benefit and I myself am claiming JSA. She said, those benefits don't qualify you for free collection. She said, are you on income support? I said no, I'm not anymore, they changed the law, I had to come off of that and start claiming JSA because my youngest child was 7 years old. She said, is your JSA income support based, I said I don't know, all I know is it is called JSA and I'm claiming it instead of income support. I would think that it is my only income so surely I qualify? She asked again is it JSA income based because there is different types, in the end I just said "yes". Can anyone clarify?

The four benefits she had listed as qualifiers are:

ESA.

Income support

Guaranteed pension credit

Income support JSA

I don't understand the difference between JSA and JSA income support. If there is one.

Hi Hannah40

Income support is for people who are not required to "sign on" as available for work

Income based JSA is for people who are required to be available for work

Therefore if your yourngest child is over the age of 5 and you are likely to be on Income based JSA

I hope that helps?
