I thought it might be nice to have a thread to talk about our christmas plans, and our strategies for coping with loneliness at this time of year when emotions are running extra high.

This will be the first christmas I've spent as a single person in like... 8 years, and I have to say it's proving a little tougher than I thought it would.  Thankfully I have my children for most of the day tomorrow, they get to have dinner here with me and then they will go to their dads in the afternoon. I really, really don't want them to go and I'm already feeling very emotional about it :( But I am trying to focus on what a lovely morning and early afternoon we will have, and on being able to freely go visiting friends and family in the afternoon and evening.  Also trying to count my blessings that I get to wake up with them in the morning.

So what are your plans?

(if there's already a thread like this i apologise, I couldn't find one)

Thanks for this, just_immi, you have said what a lot of people will be feeling.

You're right that it's helpful to focus on the positives but of course when it is the "first" of anything it is bound to feel a bit uncertain. One thing I hated about that first Christmas was peoples' (false) sympathy, plus invitations to join people I did not even know!! My "first time" I had the boys for the morning then he had them for the rest of the day so we had our Christmas on Boxing Day and while they were at their dad's I had a curry for Christmas dinner, watched Brief Encounter and had a good cry then joined a friend with a dog for a bracing walk, had a cuppa and a slice of cake at her house, came home and made a list of all the good things I had achieved in the past year and praised myself for them. Since then I enjoy being on my own more and more...it's just the sea change that is hard, I believe.

We have got some other bits on the board about this subject...read this (click) and also this (click)

Hope the day goes well, come on and tell us about it ! Laughing
