Hi all, I was doing some research about a new book called Raising Girls and then found an article about when you raise your girls encourage them to watch less films about love and romance, that only ends up in marriage and to ensure that any film that they watch passes the Bechdel Test, I was intrigued and so investigated further!

To pass the Bechdel Test the film has to

  1. Have at least two (named) women in it…
  2. Who talk to each other….
  3. About something besides a man!

You can visit the Bechdel Test Movie list, there is a key half way down the page, that explains each icon.

I found it fascinating and would be interested to hear your thoughts.

I love this idea!

Remember falling out with a friend a few years ago when I said to her "I am aware that we are both intelligent women and yet all our conversation seems to centre round blokes, we both have so much to offer, I wonder if we could do things on a different basis".... and that was the end of the friendship!!!!!!!!

Les Miserable is on that list. Really? Why do I want my daughter to watch something that is exactly what it says on the tin - miserable?

I agree though, that all the romantic stories are too much :-) My daughter has started to watch films (apart from your nice Disney stuff) over the last couple of years and has developed a liking for horror - not my thing at all. I think she is influenced by No2 son there.

On the whole, I don't think there's anything wrong with the occasional feel good film (eg she also really likes Love Actually), as long as there is a good balance. ONLY politically correct is rubbish, too. Therefore, I wouldn't go by any test, but aim for that balance. (She can watch Erin Brocovich next :P )

The website lists all the films that came out I think then rates them accordingly.

My daughter is a keen viewer of horror too, it has never been my cup of tea, I have to say!

I agree with you, I don't think that there is anything wrong with a feel good movie, but don't you find it fascinating how many films there are in this day and age where even if there are 2 women in a film, they don't even speak to each other and if they do, its about a man!

The website is so interesting! Actually I don't think it matters HOW MANY women are in the film, it is more a case of how they are portrayed. It would be great to see positive female role models for our daughters...and for our sons to see women in a better light too.

On a side note, I don't know how many people have noticed that in TV adverts the reverse is often true, men are portrayed as incompetent or inadequate eg Nurofen ad where the kids and the man all cling onto the Mum's legs while she strides around making everyone better, some of the Christmas dinner ads where the man would just waltz in at the last minute or would do something wrong (Sainsburys). Conversely the ones that encouraged mums to be slaves at Christmas (Asda, there were apparently lots of complaints to the ASA about that one). What I am saying is, it is good to question these images!!!
