Potty Training Boys

AmelieAshton

Hello, looking for some help here.

My son is 2 1/2, and he knows when he is having a wee/poo. Thing is, he doesnt want to use the potty or the toilet. Its as if he is scared of them. With him being only 2 1/2, i don't know whether to leave it a bit longer, and see if he comes round to the idea of using the potty, or if leaving it will be worse.

Any ideas?

Hi AmelieAshton

Have just said hello to you on the other thread. By the way we tend to not use our real names on posts for confidentiality Smile

Potty training, first of all boys are slower than girls (on the whole)

Secondly it is quite normal for a child to be scared not so much of the potty but of seeing something in it that has comne out of his body.

Thirdly do you have a friend with a slightly older child who could "demonstrate"? If not, choose his favourite toy, needs to be quite big such as a teddy, and have a chat with teddy in your son's hearing saying now then teddy you are a big boy now, you can do your wee on the potty and let teddy be a bit "naughty" and you say oh dear teddy if only there was another boy to show you what to do. I wonder if there is another big boy anywhere that can show you? etc etc If your son does not volunteer, say his name, eg John, can YOU show Teddy? You may have to ham this up a bit

Fourthly there are lots of good books that can help, where you read the story to the child. This book is really good fun

Finally, remember that when he does it, MEGA praise!!!

Hi AmeliaAshton. I started potty training my son, now 8, when he was 1 and half, it was during the warm season, so kept his nappy off, had one pot in garden, another indoors. I used to put Teddy's on to begin with, and also got some Big Boy pants. Getting C to use the toilet was a nightmare for me though, I ended up buying a soft seat for him (thinking this would work) I would sit reading books too.  He was trained, weeing wise before he was 1, but pooing was more difficult for me. I had visions of him wearing a nappy going to school, hehe.

hi

i trained my boys starting straight away with weeing standing up,so they don't have to sit on it at first so they got used to toilet.i used pants incase they had an accident and to catch any poo.then when they realised they werent going to fall down it while using it,or get flushed away too, they'd sit on it and do a poo too.Smile

S's potty is covered in stickers as a reward... he learned last year about 2 and a half... took 7 months from beginning to leaving house confident I didn't need back up trousers. I used to read read books to him on potty too...

s'up to you I think - I don't think any damage will be done by waiting longer, but I don't think it necessarily gets easier if you do wait - iyswim?

Begin - end time of pottying I think takes around 7 months from what I've heard - you'll have a good week and think it's clicked and then the next will feel like square one... you'll hear a mum say their child was doing it perfect from day one and then not meet her again three months down the line to hear of how there's been a few hic-ups;)
