Are you planning to make some New Year resolutions for 2014?

We asked around the office to find out what some of ours are. We then realised the only way to make the resolution become realistic was to be as specific as possible.

Have a look at our article to see what we are up to (there is a template too, for you to write up your own)

Then come along and share what your choices/resolutions are going to be for the year ahead Smile

PS: Mine is sort out all the clutter!!

I think my resolution is to spend more one on one time with my younger son. His lifestyle is so random these days that it is hard to get regular time, however I took him out ot lunch a few weeks ago but have never followed it up  (partly because he went out in a backwards baseball cap, filthy shorts and no pants, but HEY!) I have always felt emotionally close to my eldest and I want to build things with the youngest too.

When we set targets we need to make them specific. For example, it is no good just saying "I want to eat more healthily" we need to say what that would look like. The article givea the example of more fruit and veg. Working to the 5 a day rule would be good in this case, and we could find out what counts towards this, for example fruit juice is one serving, certain soups may count, tinned tomatoes in bolognese or sneaking in extra things (my favourite trick) like some spinach or peas.

What's your resolution?

Mine will be to continue going to the gym.

I would like to start swimming regularly again. This won't be a New Year's resolution however, as no matter who it is 'telling me what to do' - even myself! - I always feel the urge to do the exact opposite Wink

A friend of mine, who also goes to the gym as she's recovering from a leg injury is moidering me like crazy to go swimming.  That won't be a new year's resolution either...  But something I might try.  I just have this fear that my leg will lock and I'll drown.  I actually swam competitively for years, training twice a day for yonks, so possibly an irrational fear!

Maybe you could stay in the shallower water, sparkling, so you know you could put the other foot on the bottom of the pool?

Someone has suggested that I just 'walk' around the shallow end rather than swim.  I could possibly do that.  I will, however, have to get another cosutme.  Mine is now four sizes too big...

I'm chucking the old stuff into the back of the wadrobe.  I know my past track record, so would be daft getting rid of them Cool

Yes you have made such giant strides in the last year IDT and planning more for next year. Maybe you could think of it as a series of steps to help you feel safer?

I went to the local gym with my sons a couple of days ago as they had an offer of 12 days for £12 which was too good to miss. I dont do the gym stuff but they have a lovely swimming pool.  Anyway to cut a long story short, I have joined for the year. I didnt realise that I could get corporate membership as I work for the local authority which is considerable cheaper.  So, hopefully, a fitter me in 2014.  Like sparklinglime I also used to swim competitively when I was younger, doing the twice a day, 6 days a week training, but I think for now every other day will be fine.

Well done on acheiving both your resolutions in 2013, Tinkerbell! You obviously have more staying power than me Wink

Good luck with your goals for 2014. I have always fancied doing a sky dive myself!

I had a really good new years resolution, but I have already forgotten what it was - and the new year hasn't even started yet!!!! I usually don't make any either, so I am a bit miffed at myself.

Mary, whatever you do, don't go swimming next year. Wink (let's see if the reverse psychology stuff works).

Oh, and this is not really a resolution, but I might get the boob-job-and-tummy-tuck-all-in-one-thing in the summer. This cancer thing has to be good for something...!!!

I'm thinking I may start driving lessons again after having to give them up 10 years ago when I got married. Think it will distract from the fact we would of been celebrating later in the year.

Sounds like a good idea, zippy. There is a notion of freedom and liberation attached to learning to drive for me.

An excellent list, IDT but as you say a lot to do all at once. When we have a lot of things to tackle, one way that can be helpful is to select the one that is easiest to achieve, or at least less difficult. The stuff with your children sounds a good place to start, I know you said that your son's behaviour made you hesitant to go out more as a family. You have started work on this one already with the parenting course at school and hopefully this will give you confidence for more outings, start with shorter ones though rather than a massive complicated trip?
