I recently posted a set of pictures shot by my six year old daughter with one of my cameras on my blog. They were featured on the front page of Opera community. Which is kind of depressing seeing as none of mine have : (

But joking aside I'm just a bit chuffed. I didn't realise just that suddenly page hits went from their normal ten or twenty a day into the hundreds.

I of course think she and her brother are amazing anyway and of course don't need any sort of affirmation of this fact, not that that stops me from feeling all glowing and proud and wanting to tell everyone : )

**Sometimes I think... WOW! my spelling has really improved recently. And then I realise spell checker has stopped working.

Hee hee! You have competition! Well done your girl :) Is she as thrilled as you are?

I had a look, they are smashing! Black and white pics always look more professional in my book too!

I don't think we have ever had spell checker since the redesign, is it something that you miss? I could always have words with our technical whizz and see if we can get it on? Although I must say, I haven't noticed any crazy spelling from yourself!

Does your daughter like photography? Does she have her own camera?

My daughter just uses my cameras : ) well not really my Canon 40D as that cost the price of a second hand car, I have let her use it but not wander off with it... she often asks though.

As for spell checker... if you write what ever and then click on 'Disable rich-text' it starts working, well the one in firefox and Chrome do anyway.

They are great Bubblegum, my daughter is also interested in photography and attended a class last week at a local uni which she thoroughly enjoyed. Her new camera didnt quite cost the price of a second hand car though.

I'm fairly new on here, so can I ask is photography your career or a hobby? I wanted to know how my daughter goes about getting a portfolio together for applying for a college course next year, hope you dont mind me asking :)

It's a hobby, I just take pictures of my kids, mainly anyway.

If she wants a portfolio she should get together a selection of photos that all show something different... as in not lots of pictures all the same thing.

I googled and found this...

When I aplied for my foundation course in art and design many years ago my portfolio was mainly sketches that showed Angelsey, old buildings, farmyards, farm stuff, neolithic standing stones... and embarrassingly lots of Orcs and dragons and elves : )

I think fifteen to twenty of her favourite pictures, but I'm not one hundred percent sure. She should call up where ever she is thinking of applying to and ask what sort of thing they are looking for, ask the art teacher from here school, he or she must get lots of portfolios ready for students.

Don't know what it's like nowadays but years ago I would mount them by cutting out an oblong just a bit smaller than the picture on white card and fixing the picture to the back, then into a plastic sheet and into an art folder (A3)

Just google something like 'how to do a photography portfolio' or something.

Is it a photography course or an art and design course she is thinking about?

AND! you don't need an expensive camera to take good pictures.

Right now I am following this course online... you don't even have to registers for anything or submit anything, you can just follow and do the stuff and read and look at what other people are doing, and it's completely free : )

One of my lecturers from years ago told me about a chap that applied to the college whos entire portfolio was drawn on the insides of cigarette packets and bear mats : )

Thanks Bubblegum, you've given some really helpful advice which I will pass on to my daughter. She wants to do A'level photography, dont need any gcse's but they do ask for a portfolio. Will also look at the online course, thanks again :)

just wandering, did the guy with the cig packs and beer mats get in

Yeah he got in, as far as I recall. My lecturer was trying to point out that it's ability rather than how it's represented or technical ability... at least I think so. They want to see something that they can develop : )

A friend of mine teaches A Level photography, if I can get hold of him over the next few days I shall ask him for you : )

Phew, I was beginning to think it was just my son. Both my sons are very interested in their appearences, although neither their dad nor I had any interest in fashion or hairstyles or anything of that nature. However, I always did tell my sons how lovely they are on a regular basis, and I still do.

A few days ago my eight year old son slipped over on some rocks and broke the tip off one of his front teeth, hardly noticable and miraculously just a small scratch on his cheak, no blood or bruising.

After the initial shock, he was shaking and crying, after he had calmed down a bit while I was cuddling him he paused his sobing to shakingly say... I wont look good in any of your pictures anymore... and continued to sob : )

Anna!

Spell checker!

It still doesn't work, not in Chrome anyway, it now works in firefox but since the 'Disable Rick-Text' link seems to have dissapeared... it no longer works in chrome.

Hi bubblegum, our wonderful technical whizz did fix the spell check, however it seems to be broken again.

Unfortunately he has lots of other things he is working on, I am forever picking him up on one thing or another. He says it won't be off the list of things to do, however it has moved down, sorry!

Ummm, two weeks of wine and poetry - divine! Well actually not so sure about the poetry, but everything else! Yes!

there once was a sit called one space

where Anna was a 'top face'

she said 'no' to the poets

(didn't like them, you know it)

But to the offer of wine she said 'Ace'....

I always spill coffee on my keyboards and then certain keys stick and because I type very fast letters go missing, It always happens. I sit with a coffee in front of me and invariably knock it over. This keyboard is about two months old and already the spacebar sticks... I have to periodicaly tap it rapidly to loosen it up.

I don't have sugar in my coffee... It's probably the milk and anyway sometimes it's wine that I spill : )

I stopped writing poetry in my late 20's, when I realised it wasn't very good : )

Here is a line from a song 'Age of Free Poetry' by a group called 'Whitey on the moon' "After the divorce there was an age of great poetry" ...I like it.

Here is my favourit song by them... Afganistan It's an amazing song, great words when you listen to them.

I wrote about them on my blog once and then later one of the members wrote to me and said thanx : )

He he Louise, does that job come with an allowance of alcohol?

I come from a little village, and they have over the last ten years or so appointed a 'village scribe' who is supposed to write the chronicles. There's a little room for her (or him) to write in in one of the communal buildings and she/he gets a jug of cider a week (not really cider, local drink similar)....

Hi Hopeful

I am really really chuffed! No-one has ever written a poem for/about me!! I am beaming all over and have shared it with my colleagues! Kiss

Have a look at our Poetry Corner and please add some of your own, I'm afraid that we can't offer wine or cider, but feel free to provide your own (just keep it clean!!!)

bubblegum - how cool is that to receive a thank you from someone that you admire! Stop drinking around your keyboard, you are setting a very bad example! Everyone knows that you shouldn't have drinks around electrical things, what will the children think tut tut! Wink
