Hi everyone, I see single parent house shares have become very popular- I hadn't heard of it until I read it on here!

I'm hoping someone who has already had experience with this might be able to help me, especially if they managed to do it whilst on benefits!

Did anyone found that it helped more by having at least one parent working at least part time? When I was looking for my own place, I found it dreadfully difficult to find a landlord or estate agent that would accept me as I have to claim benefits, as I was still on maternity leave- I am now unemployed, but looking for work again (not that I'm having much luck!)

If anyone could help me, that would be fabulous!

xXx

Hi Clevermummy, sorry i haven't had experience of house sharing since i have had my children, but i thought you might find this website useful for finding somewhere to rent that takes people on benefits.

Hi Sally,

Thank you for the link, I searched my post code but there were 0 search results, unfortunately.

Not really sure how to go about it without a job tbh

Hi Sally thanks for that link, I have never seen that website before, great!

CM12 (CleverMummy2012, that's your new nickname!!) I am not sure where you live in the country, but if you would consider London here is a great forum for single parents looking to share.

Although you don't have a job right now, keep looking, it might be that you find someone who would like to share with someone who can stay at home with the children? Who knows?!

There is a website out there for helping people find rented accommodation that asks for card details to make a one off charge, that doesn't actually help at all, I think it's a scam website, but can't remember if it's that one...

Lol thanks, Anna, I'll check it out, but I was hoping to share with my friend, although she's going starting uni in September,  she'll still be local,  but not sure if that'd help or if she's still interested in starting a house share hehe

Ewww, you don't want to be handing over any cash let alone card details, yes CM12 steer well clear!

I have just sent an email to a colleague who I am hoping can give me further info for single parent families who want to house share, with regards to housing benefit, tax credits etc, so hopefully I will hear back from her at some point.

I also was wondering whether you might give Shelter a call on 0808 800 4444, they might have some info, if you do find out anything let us know!

Yeah I fell for it last year, they had £15 out of me, and there were no numbers to ring and didn't get a response from the email :-/

Ahhh awesome, that'd be fab, thanks so much, and I will give them a ring, I didn't think of that :-) thank you Anna :-D

Oh CM12, I am sorry to read that you signed up and paid money, that is so wrong that there was nothing for you.

Let us know what Shelter say as I am collating an article specifically for this information.
