On Monday night (29th) at 9pm on BBC3 Jamelia is presenting a dicumentary about single mums (not single parents, note!) It is mainly about what happened to single mothers in the past and brings it up to date to look at social attitudes nowadays, I expect it will be very interesting and I wish it was on a more mainstream channel.

Jamelia herself has written an article in the Radio Times about herself, I tried to find it on the Net but it is not yet on her Press Cuttings site. She has two children by different fathrers, the first was a violent relationship from which she escaped and the second partner abusive in a different way. These days she is a single parent and sees a lot of positives about it, I will post the article if it goes on site in the near future

they'd have upped the age of getting a bus pass soon to 66 - so that means we will have to include toes.  Which possibly makes us even younger...??

Did anyone see the Jamelia programme? One of my colleagues was interviewed, I have yet to see it, but I hear it went well.

Jamelia came to our offices a few months ago and did some filming - we have pictures and autographs of her, she was very sweet. Smile

Hazeleyes and I were 'chatting' last night about this.

I found it incredibly moving, especially when she was talking to the woman who HAD to give up her daughter.

No one can put a tag onto a lone parent, as there isn't one that applies.

Jamelia too appriciated that, as she was saying that she thought she had things bad until she spoke to others.

I do hope she realises how brave she has been too, to have left a violent relationship.

She is someone I've admired for many years now.  She does always come across as being a lovely person.

I thought the program was fantastic - really represented the views of lots of single parents i think.  Wasn't the journalist lady really obnoxious tho?  The one who kept banging on about how it must be better for couples to stay together etc, with no acknowledgement to abusive situations etc.  I loved the woman who stood up to the politicians in the 80s / 90s, she came across really well, was she your colleague perhaps Anna?

Was Anna's colleague in it? Ooohhh how exciting. I of course read Anna's post, but I didn't realise the colleague was in the programme last night.

I am guessing that the lady who was watching the video of the 1980s Tories policies was Anna's colleague.

I thought the programme was excellent, and I particularly liked the bit near the end where the researcher guy was looking at statistics about factors affecting childrens' achievements, and he showed that the most significant was social and economic deprivation.......and also he highlighted the fact that one of the most damaging things to children was CONFLICT, which is what I am always saying on here.. people who "stay together for the sake of the children" and live in an atmosphere of conflict are not doing their children any favours. And conflict that our own children may witness between us and the other parent is not helpful either, which is why we always recommend that this stays away from the children too  (....puts soapbox away Cool)

Hi all, yes my colleague was the one who stood up to the politicians and then showed Jamelia press clippings (that was in our single parents training room!)

Annie also was on Newsnight in the 90's with Ann Widdicombe and was absolutely brilliant! She is now Bristol's Parenting Expert and does a fantastic job, very passionate for the cause!

Can you believe the politician who lumped single parents in with thieves and drug addicts?? Then everyone clapped Surprised Oh my I was incensed! Yell
