I am a single mum with a ten month old son, i have been getting incapacity benefit for 3 years and just had an interview with the job centre, conversation was a bit of a  blur due to me crying having to recount how i am doing but but at end of interview i have been sent to a  training centre to try to find a job , my question is im not ready to work cause i really would like to enjoy a year or two with my son on the account that when i had him i did not bond with him due to me being depressed , but recently i have started bonding with him and i know that i love him and he loves me , so  should  i go  to job centre and come off incapacity benefit and if i do  would i still have to look for work on income  support ? any advice will be appreciatated many thanks in advance Dami10

Hello and welcome dami10,

As I understand it, income support is available to single parents automatically until the child reaches 7 (I believe.) There has been some talk of lowering this age, but that is all.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_10018708

That site should assist you in showing your allowance.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_175842

This site explains the changes in 2008 which shows that you also have the right to restrict the number of hours you are prepared to work so long as your child in under 12 years of age.

Hope this helps.

Once again, welcome.

Hi dami10

Welcome to One Space

Garak is right, you can choose to stay at home until your youngest child is seven, as a single parent on Income Support. This was propsed to change to aged five in the future but nothing definite yet.....but with your son being so small you should in any case be Ok. You may well "have" to go to the training centre at first but their main aim in this scheme was evidently to get you off Incapacity Benefit (as it was called)

Please do email our conifdential 1-2-1 Money Advice Service as they will be able to give you the very best information relevant to your situation.

Thanks Louise,

Sorry for putting up other links, but I thought it might just give dami10 a good idea of the situation she is in. At least until someone could put up the 1-2-1 link.

Again, my apologies.
