Can't believe I've never found this site before! I was googling the rules on JSA as I've just been switched over, and wasn't sure what I was told at the JC could be right, as been told I have to look for full time work, and be prepared to travel 90 mins each way, and yet have a clipping of an article that says they can't make us work outside of reasonable school hours, so was trying to get more info on all that, and found this site!
My name's Nat and I have a 6 year old boy! I've been a lone parent for 5.5 years now since my son was 1, I did work for 2 years in that time, but when my son was starting school, I asked for a change of hours and my employer refused (despite me having told them both when I started the job, and again at my 1 year review, that I would need to change hours when he started school, and being assured on both occasions that it wouldn't be a problem!! 
) so have been on IS for 2 years, and just had the lovely switch onto JSA! I won't get on my soapbox about that, as could be here all night!

Forgot to say - if you look at the News section in www.spanuk.org.uk there is a leaflet on single parent rights and flexibilities on JSA. If Jobcentre Plus are are contravening their own policies then let us know.
Thanks, I shall have a read of that when I get chance, looks interesting! I'd sort of heard of SPAN before, but didn't realise it was based in Bristol (that's where I live!)

Yes SPAN is based in Bristol, we have our Family and Study Centre here and courses will start again in September and usually there are some single parent get togethers too.
I am not sure what you are interested in doing, but I just saw at the bottom of the Course Guide (click) there is a Skilled Advisor course being advertised - I think this will be a great course!
Oh great that you have found us. You are not alone. Parliamentary and Policy Officer should be on-line in the next couple of days. Know that she will want to know about your switch to JSA. SPAN has just produced research on single parents' experience of the switch - see publications on www.spanuk.org.uk.
