Hi,

I applied to do a full time course in childcare back in January, I had an interview in February with a conditional offer, I had a definite offer letter last week asking me to enrol at college this Friday. However when I rang to make an enquiry the person I spoke to said I was not eligible for the course after all as the government has withdrawn funding for students over age 19yrs on full time courses. I was instead given an appointment to see someone at college next week to discuss part time study alongside a work placement.

Has anyone else here heard of the withdrawal of funds for students over age 19yrs?

Has anyone else here done a part time course/work placement and did you get a job at the end of it?

The funding withdrawal for fulltime courses for mature students is one of a number of measures that came into force a while ago as a general rule (I seem to remember it was ages ago) although concessions are usually available. Are you on Income Support? As a single parent you are entitled at present to stay on IS until your daughter is seven and I would have thought that you therefore fell into the concession caregory. What did they say about about that?

If the college only offers concessions to part time students then that is what you will have to do, although the work placement is another question as you have the entitlement to IS. The college will have all the latest info available so you will just have to see what they say at the appointment.

Thanks for the reply, I suppose I was just really surprised they gave me a conditional offer for a course I'm not eligible for as I have wasted 6 months waiting for a definite offer only to be told that I'm too old.

If the government funding was withdrawn ages ago they never should have called me for an interview in the first place they could have advised me on work placement/part time study back in January, so I'm understandably a little annoyed with the college.

I will post here what happens next week at the interview.

Maybe they had an exception for people on IS at that time and they only just had the plug pulled on THAT? The concessions used to exist for people on beenfits and now it is only JSA or ESA.... that sounds the most likely, as the fees for people not on benefits were payable here some time ago (just going by son)

Hi,

The college have suggested I go for a part time course, it is only 12 weeks long and only one day a week, it costs £245 and there are no concessions. So I am now on a waiting list for an interview for the part time course.

That seems very unfair, and the fees rather high. I wonder if there are any bursary funds you could apply to for a grant to help with the cost, it is worth asking when you have your interview, english rose.

thanks Louise, I will ask about a grant. The course is titled "Award in support work in schools C&G 5329-20 (level 2)"

I have to do this course before I can apply for an apprenticeship in Teaching and Learning Support.

If the college do not offer anything then I would encourage you to have a look for a private grant. There is a website called Turn 2 Us and you can search on there, it is rather time counsuming but a mine of information
