So comforting to have found this website, from this very time I am now single, I met a wonderful guy who I have spent the last 14 years with, unfortunately due to his drinking and lack of social skills I have decided to call it a day, My son is 12 and it has been a very big decision to do this, plus the fact due to severe depression I have had some challenging times, fortunately I have wonderful friends. I now need to find out what my next step is to enable a secure future for my son, by the way I have yet to tell him that his mum and dad are splitting up...... any advice would be great xxxx

My suggestion about your son would be to tell him honestly and gently and try, if possible, to have worked out what arrangements will apply to him before you tell him. That is the thing that will worry him most: What will happen to me?
