I've been using search engines to find out what is happening with the cuts to EMA in Wales.  While I can see there are going to be cuts, I can't find anything saying how much or when from.

My oldest son is in receipt of this, and my daughter is still waiting to hear about hers (they keep asking for more evicence, and as you have to send originals, I'm actually running out of evidence!).

Please can anyone advice me as to what is happening?

Thank you.

We would manage without it, but it does help with buying the folders, lunch etc with them (no free school dinners in sixth form or college).

EMA is not accepting new applicants in ENGLAND from January 2011. If EMA has already been granted for the 2010-11 academic year then it will be paid for that academic year and then stop. Students (and their parents) are asked to approach their college/school to apply for a grant if in hardship.

There has been no annnouncement made about students in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales....as all have their own autonomy on this.

This appears to be the alternative to scrapping Child Benefit for 16-18 year olds still in education.

Here is the weblink all about it. There is a section confirming the current position in Wales.

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this will affect anyone on here either directly or indirectly but thought I would post the link, I think it is terrible!

Anyone who may be affected by the cessation of the Independent Living Fund can contact our 1-2-1 Money Advice service in confidence to look at what their new financial situation is likely to be.

Everyone will be affected by the council funding cuts. I thought the two most significant points in that article were that public services could be "bought" by local people/communities and run by them (on one hand that presents business opportunities, on the other it absolves councils from the responsibility to provide, say, a library) and the different policy for homeless families. If they can be found private rented accommodation for 12 months then that goes right back to the bed and breakfast culture that we were supposed to be leaving behind. The private landlords will be rubbing their hands in glee.

How is this goverment now going to force young people to stay in education till they are 18?

My 2 daughters are gutted that the EMA has been scrapped, yes they understand that there will be some help available via the college but they dont want to have to queue up for the help as everyone will know that its the poor queue, they make a very good point.

This to me means paying £20 per week for bus passes which I simply dont have, really dont know what to do about this, the girls both paid for their own passes each week.

Yes, this is going to affect a lot of people. EMA is a relatively new benefit but has been very helpful to many people. At least it is to be paid for the rest of the academic year so you swon't have to face this cost until December. Are both your daughters doing another year at college? As for the "poor queue" I think that will be a long queue!!!

The children and I were talking about this last night, as I reckon the Welsh Assembly will follow.  Daughter can walk to sixth form, so that won't be so much of an issue while eldest is in college 10 miles away.

It's sad they see it as the poor queue - even though it's a good description...  As I was telling eldest last night after yet another lecture about not doing his work, with 1 in 5 youngsters out of work, going to college and working hard is a way to a better future.

The way he's going he won't even get a reference.

But, he's 19, and what do I know Undecided
