Hi

Well this new bursary isnt fair at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friends son receives disability living allowance as he has multi complex special needs, his mum is his carer and recieves carers allowance, she is also on income support. Her son has enrolled at college for a mechanics course along with his friend who has very similar problems.

His friend will receive the bursary as both his parents work and they can afford for their son to claim income support in his own right along with disibility living allowance.

My friends son will recieve not one penny because his mum cant afford for him to receive income support in his own right, he for one cant manage finances and for 2 she would then lose child benefit. She has called disability and they have confirmed this morning that she will be financially a lot poorer if her son were to claim IS in his own right.

Has anyone else come across this, it absolutely stinks!!!!!!!!

This realy hasnt been thought through at all, and has now left my friend worried sick as to if she can afford for her son to go to college and her son who has aspergers worried and confused!!!!!!!!!!

This cant be right, it certainly isnt fair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Anna, no its not the same, for the Disabled student allowance you need to be doing a degree or such like so I would say 19+

The one my friends son needs is the 16-19 one for college xxx

i dont understand that, when my husband went to enrol our disabled son for his college course, he took all the necessary documentation to his college to check if he was entitled to the bursary, we are on income support and my son recieves dla but does not claim income support in his own right as we still recieve child benefit for him and child tax credits but my husband was told he would be eligible for the full bursary i think your friend needs to find out whats going on as the same rules should apply to everyone

Hi, thank you for that but she has tried over and over and the answer is the same, he will get not one penny, not sure if you were just lucky or if its down to individual colleges, it really isnt fair though, I will show here your post in the morning and really appreciate that you took the time to tell me xxx
