Dreadlocks!

Bubblegum

Hello,

My son want's dreadlocks, does anyone know anything about them?

He's being going on about them for a while now.

This is the sort of hair he has, it's very thick both in the amount that seems to grow out of his head and the actual strands themselves. He want's to look like this sort of thing.

Anyone got kids with dreadlocks or dreadlocks themselves? It's just I've done some googling but I'm still non the wiser.

Hi bubblegum, my friend got his hair plaited all over (very short) and then twisted on a regular basis, he now has shoulder length dreads, but he has afro hair.

Another black friend went to London and had it done professionally and it looks great!

The link that littlered hen looks really useful, I like the natural idea best! A white friend of mine used beeswax every day, it did eventually take, but boy did it smell!

You could join the Intermix forum and get some ideas from users on there?

I look forward to seeing the photos and the transistion!! smiley

I spoke with my sister who lives in manchester, she's mixed race and one of her friends has them, she's going to get me some special wax of somesort and if he still wants them in a months time we are going to go up and stay the weekend and her friend will do it for him.

There is some specialist afro hair shop near her apparently.

He's obsessed with his hair, up untill about three months ago for about a year or so he wanted to look like this... Hally Berry in X-men I took him to talk to a local hairdresser but they said that one he was a bit too young to be having his hair bleached and two it's so dark and thinck it would be very difficult to do.

I wasn't too keen on the bleach thing but dreadlocks I don't mind, if he's still keen in a months time.

thanx for the replies and the links.

My daughters father has dreadlocks and I always wanted to locks her hair, but she would never let me sad.

That would be brilliant to get someone to actually start them off for you. Have you told your son that when he chooses to change his hair style, if they have set well, he will have to cut all his lovely hair off?

Does your sons hair bleach with lemon in the sun??

He is aware that he will have to cut it all off if he want's to change.

I've not tried the lemon juce thing on him, I did it my self when I was younger and it seemed to work.

My sons hair is almost black and it's very course, his mum's mum is from Barbados and his mum's dad is from either Afganistan or Iran (she didn't know) and the local hairdresser said that it would be very difficult to bleach and not have it go orange or break off.

I've found some web sites and I'm slowly reading them so maybe I'll do it for him if he still wants them in a while.

Cool, you really are a super dad!

I used to use Sun-In do you remember that? You would squirt it on wet hair then blow dry it (or go out in the sun) it was great!!

I have just Googled Videos on 'How to dreadlocks' and also 'Bleaching African American hair'  there are loads of videos on the matter - great!
