A new report on domestic violence by the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary told us today what many of our readers have known for a long time.

The BBC reported that "Thousands of people are at risk of harm or even murder because of widespread police failure in England and Wales to tackle domestic abuse, a report says. The response from many police forces is alarming and ineffective, the report by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary said."

We have heard similar things on this forum for a while, with many describing the Police treating their problem as a low priority issue.

At the same time, many have praised the Police for their work, and said that they had felt well supported, especially by individual officers.

What is your experience of this problem? What do you think about the report, and is it fair?

You can find more information here on our site, and of course don't forget that you can contact our domestic abuse expert Lesley if you would like a personal response.

Hi sergiozed, the report is shocking but doesn't really surprise me.

I have worked with survivors of domestic abuse for the last 10 years and also have experience of it myself 20 years ago.

Things have changed a lot since the early 1990's, there is a lot more awareness in the police force and other agencies, but this report highlights that there is still a lot more to be done.

At the bottom of the BBC article there is a form for people to share their experience. The more of us that can share, the more our voices get heard and hopefully more changes can happen.

I would like to see abusers getting arrested and prosecuted by the police, rather than relying on the 'victim' to be brave/resilient/aware enough to stand up and presss charges.

I felt as though i was taken seriously when I reported my ex assaulting me to the police, everyone was really nice and supportive. However it took them three days to finally take my report and that was after I chased them to come and do it.  I can't fault them really, I was treated very well and was made to feel safe, though I know others who unfortunately haven't had the same experience :(

Hello just_immi

I am glad you feel you had a positive experience when you reported the recent assualt (although I do think that the delay was unacceptable) As you say, not everyone feels this. For example, I have a friend who was assualted by her husband, while she was heavily pregnant, and the police refused to take it forward. Her husband was a copper.
