Hello everyone,

Im hoping someone can advise me over an urgent matter.

I have just had another debt collecting letter threatening to enter my home, remove my belongings etc. I have emailed them twice and the original agency with whom the debt was accrued. They have not replied even though I have said I will take matters to the Trading Standards in the new year if I am sent any more letters. I feel Im being harrassed for almost £1,500 and I dont even use or have a catalogue. Im trying to cut down on my outgoings-even cancelling the internet at home as of january, so I would not pay catalogue prices anyway.

I am getting quite scared that they will "black list" my address.

Any advice would ease my mind. Thanks in advance.

Bella.

Hi Bella. You've e.mailed them twice, and no reply. If I were you, I would actually ring them and speak to someone, such as a manager. I wouldn't wait for knocks at door either, ring Trading Standards. Don't leave it until after Christmas, do it today if possible. I have used TS, and found them brilliant. Good luck

Hello,

Thanks for advice. I was trying to avoid ringing them as it is a premium number.

If I must then I will. Im getting quite upset by the letters. The last thing I want is my son opening the door and these thugs standing there. Doesnt bear thinking about.

Will let you know result.

Thanks.

Hi Bella, I've found this link about the rights of ballifs. I've pasted it as there is a live chat where you can talk to someone. Don't know if it will help, but I guess it's worth a go.

HI Bella

Not sure if you are saying this isnt your debt, if so this happened to me, I moved house and the next tenant took up a catologue in my name, it took me almost 5 years to sort out had to involve the Police identity theft people and that still didnt resolve it, I received a court summons to make me bankrupt it was awful, in the end all it took was one reasonable person to listen to the date thatI moved here and a copy of my tenancy agreement. Just thought I would pass this on as it might help you or someone else.

My advice to anyone who knows the debt isnt theirs, fight it.

I owed Nat West about 14K, I still do only it's been sold onto two debt collecting agencies, they finally caught up with me after about five years of no fixed abode, I made the mistake of applying for a credit card and so a security cheque was made and they got my address... I went to CAB and they there and then sorted it out by phoning people. A standing order (not a Direct Debit as that gives them control) was set up and I pay them back two quid a month.

Not quite the same as you seeing as the debt is in fact mine, but CAB sorted it out in an afternoon : )

I too have found CAB brilliant. I went to them to see if they could help me keep the council house that I had grown up in for 30 odd years. They put me in touch with a solicitor who dealt in these things, also got me a solicitor for sorting out huge issues with the 'family'. The council one didn't work, but he fought a good fight for me I have to say. The 'family' one was brilliant, and soon stopped them in their tracks.

WoW, thanks for all of the advice.

I think the threat of getting the trading standards involved worked! I have not heard anything else from the debt agency.(The debt was not mine-its for an outsize-clothing catalogue and if they saw me they would know I have not bought from them;Im underweight).

If I hear anything else then I have no choice but to get legal with them. These people cannot get away with this. I reckon some people will just pay these demands to stop the letters and the threats. It is wrong.

Thanks again to all.

Just been talking to my friend who works for the CAB and she says it is getting so busy, lots of debt, homeless issues where people are being evicted the day after they turn up for advice, lots more sofa surfers, domestic violence also on the increase and the possibility of the CAB`s closing all over the place with these cuts!!!!!!!!!

CABs have always had to sail close to the wind with funding. Logically, what is happening means that there will be MORE demand for their services......so the service should be expanded. There are local projects which are doing OK; I know in York there is  a very effective Outreach service which helps a lot of people in debt and at risk of homelessness and runs advice sessions at community centres, but if the funding is not there then ALL of these services are at risk
