Just been reading this

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13377586

It seems we are doing little in the uk to tackle this problem.

It also all well and good going on about beating it through work, where are the jobs, where is the childcare?

I dont know if anyone else on here who is currently looking for work is finding as I am that approx 80% of the advertised jobs are either under the 16 hours or are 5 days over 6 or even 7 which means for many single parents there is no possibility of applying for the vacancy as there is no childcare available. I am left wondering, is that these are all vacancies that genuinally do require these hours to be worked, or and call me suspicious but it seems to me it could be the employers way around not having to employ single parents?

I would like to see a lot more pro active approach from ANY government I believe that school meals should be free for ALL children certainly of primary school age, maybe they could give that when they take child benefit of some people, also breakfast clubs should be free and become part of the school day so no child misses out.

It seems so wrong that a family who just miss the criteria for free school meals end up having to pay a fortune for either packed lunches or dinners, which hen in effect take them back below the theshold, ludicrous in my opinion!!!!!!

Sorry to rant but this particular subject makes me really cross, we give billions of £s in aid to other countries but our own are neglected, that cant be right can it!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting this, tiredmum. There will always be some people who "just miss out" on things, wherever you draw the line I suppose but I do know of many parents who find it hard when they are in work and even though on a low income, have all their council tax to pay and need to pay for their prescriptions and for dental treatment, as well the school meals you rightly mention.

One way I think the whole system falls down is.....if it is received wisdom that families need extra support for their child to have a free meal at school during termtime, what about the school holidays? parents get no extra and the child still has to be fed. I think there should be vounchers issued in the holidays.

The working hours thing, what I wonder is that as paying Working Tax Credit is an employer's responsibility, employing someone 15 hours a week means they have less bother with the payroll?? The need for flexible working (ie evenings and weekends) does discriminate against lone parents, especially those without local family support.

I do the payroll for my friends business, and at the moment, I know two get working tax credits, but it is paid direct to their bank, and not dealt with by the employer.  Is this going to change and become the employer's responsibility?  Its the maternity and paternity that can be costly.

I know that since the nightmare contract has ended, four plumbers and one sub-contractor lost their jobs with us.  Four others were put on paid holiday for two weeks.

On Anglesey a number of employers who did pay well have closed down.  I have seen people who were earning upwards of £30k stacking shelves in a local farm and pets suppliers, and know they're getting minimum wage.  How on earth do they cope?

There are no part-time jobs available, as they have been filled by those from the businesses that closed.

While you have millionaires around that cabinet table there will be no solutions.

However, I struggle greatly to come up with any.

Having lived amongst the mega rich for a while, and my home being sold to become a holiday house to a mega-rich person has certainly changed my attitude towards them.  Many - the vast majority - are incredibly arrogant and selfish.  That' is how they make their money, but switching off totally to those who are not in the same situation as them.  How you make them see the problems of those in poverty so they appreciate the need for their taxes to help, I don't know.

However, my friend's son is a trader, and the way he has supported his mother and step-father through this nightmare is comendable.  He is very generous too with his sister and his step-brother.  (Still arrogant to the rest of the world though...!)

Personally, I think it is an absolute disgrace that children in our country are living like this.

Heartbreaking.  What amazingly bright children though.  The sixteen year old so well aware of how her postcode is already effecting her future, however well she does in school...

Wondered how long it would take for people to see through the PM`s inflamitory remarks earlier today via the Telegraph

My fifteen year old's face was a picture.

I told him today that it was important that both parents supported their children, however that some chose a different route in life and didn't feel able to.

I just wonder how many children this remark has affected too.

Good for Fiona Weir though from Gingerbread.  Her comments were at least considered.

I liked what Erin Pizzey said about it not just being dads to blame!

But yes, tiredmum, a supreme irony.....

Yes, I did too.

I'm guessing though when you have had a good upbrining, leading to a good job, leading to a very powerful job (shan't mention that I think the power's gone to his head), with affluence, security and a lovely wife, then you're not going to make the effort to understand how the other half live.

I liked Erin Pizzys comments too.

I dont know if thats always true that if you have money you either dont understand or dont care, some out there who have far more money then DC do care and do understand, I just find him slimy and patronising to be honest and NC is his puppet!!!!!!!!

It actually felt over the last couple of days that Vince Cable was in charge every political story was from him or about him, I met him and he was actually a really nice man, not sure I like his tactics at the moment with the unions, think it will be a great big own goal very soon but we shall see.

Just they're not making grand announcements to the world.
