I am on Income support and D.L.A, can my brother use my address as a care/of address even though he doesn't live with me?

Hello sam1969

Has your brother got another postal address, where he is registered on the Electoral Roll? May I ask what he is using the care/of address for? If for benefits, tax or CSA then I would be very careful, and maybe suggest he uses another address. If for something else not connected with agencies then hopefully there will not be an overlap but do let us know what the correspondence would be. Getting the PO to redirect your mail is not an option if it is related to money as they are obliged to work with the Benefits Agencies to prevent fraud.

Thank you for replying to me.  My brother was on JSA but has never lived here and now he is working away and he doesn't have a postal address but mine.  To make things worse he declared himself bankrupt and by law he has to have an address, which is mine and to make things worse the c.s.a have written to him at this address because he has two children.  I am now currently under investigation by benefits & fraud directors.  I am sick with worry because i am claiming housing benefit, income support and D.L.A.

I am not surprised you are worried, poor you. You need to be able to show that he is NOT part of your household.

There is a really good FREE Helpline that may be able to help you, it is called Community Legal Advice. Click on the blue link and you will see their website, give them a ring. Have details of your own benefits handy so that they can give you free advice. Good luck, let us know what they say.

(please note, for anyone else, this is only for people in England and Wales)

I was just about to post a similar thread!! Sorry to hop onto this one but ive just had a debt letter to my home for nearly £1000, its in a name unfamiliar to me and as far as I know this person has never lived in my home. Ive done some digging and its a friend of a neighbours daughter two doors up!!!! (I would make a fab detective lol) Why she has used and more importantly how the heck she has obtained credit with a c/o address is beyond me. Ive emailed the company to say this person has never lived here, is that enough?

Hi scallyally, keep the letter and a copy of the email you have sent, it should be enough but at least if you receive more letters you have proof that you did something about it, it does seem really easy for people to do this, I have lived here for 9 years and still get debt letters for previous tenants and also for people who have never lived here and have obtained credit using my address whilst I have lived here, I actually blame the people giving the credit, it is really easy to check the electoral role and if a preson isnt on it at the address where they want the credit then it should be an automatic no xxx

Yes I will tiredmum, ive done some digging online and she is only 18!!! Thats a lot of debt to get into at that age, also its they type of place that has done the application online and had lent her the money to be paid back in 30 days or when she was paid, clearly this wasnt done. She must think that she's got away with it, surely they will have logged her IP address, silly girl

Maybe you can find out her address and let the company know, yes its harsh but might just nip it in the bud for her and she wont do it again, it is all too easy these days to get into debt at such a young age and once you are there it is so hard to get back in the black isnt it xxx

heh heh. Actually, she might not have been trying to defraud them, the company could have made a typo when they put her into their database.

One thing you DEFINITELY need to check, scallyally, not yet but in a couple of months, go on Experian and ask for a copy of your credit report, I think it costs about £2, just check that the lender has not lodged a black mark against your address, I believe the debt is supposed to count against the person, not the address anymore but I would certainly check.

Louise, good point. Yes I will do that in a month or two. Im certainly not being held for anyones debt. I dont think its a type as the address on the letter is c/o then my address, its like she has said "oh im staying there temporily" they will find her, it wont be hard at all and for such a large amount she is silly to think that she will get away with it, I hope they prosecute her too for giving misleading info!
