hi there, i have 3 daughters, my eldest at 19 is about to finish her A levels and then going off to university. she was going to get a summer job to enable her to get the many items she needs to take along with her and also to pull up the deposit needed for her student accomodation. Im very worried for her as her earnings will be taken as household income and anything she earns will be eaten away and will defeat the purpose they are intended for. has anyone had this experience. many thanks in advance.

Hi flowergirl75, what a tricky situation for you to be in, are you worried that your daughters income will effect your benefits or affect hers? either way there are services that maybe able to see if there is any help available.

You could look at the Turn2us website as they are good at finding out what benefits etc you are entitled to depending on your specific circumstances. There is also this link about students and benefits.

You can also post a message to One spaces Money expert or try the Money advice service hopefully one of them will be able to help you.

Hi thanks so much for your reply. Well I'm particularly worried for my daughter primarily. she has so much to get for uni, household items for student accommodation etc plus we have to come up with deposit for accommodation. We are squirrelling away bits and bobs at the mo, saucepans, knives, forks etc but when my child benefit ends il barely be able to feed her let alone keep collecting items for her. My concern is if she gets a little part time job to provide for herself she will be expected to pay rent and council tax so I don't see how we'll be able to manage. I've been trying to get in touch with my local citizens advice. I'm so worried about how we'll cope. And it makes me feel I'm failing my daughter when she's doing so well in her life and I should be able to provide for her.

Hi there,

my oldesst (now 24) studied for his BA and MA and lived on mainly a student loan, plus a little job (there are things they can do before it cuts into benefits). Students as a rule don't get housing benefit. He didn't have to pay council tax till he had finished his studies.

Hi flowergirl75

The above posts have given you some really good info. I just want to add that it is worth contacting the finance department of the university she is hoping to attend and asking about any additional financial support. For example my friend's daughter received an additional grant (through the Uni) as they had a special scheme for the first child from a single parent family to go to uni.

The Turn2Us link Sallyhas given you....also do a grants search on there. Warning, it takes a long time to go through it all but worth a go.

Thanks again for replies. I'm going to sit and wait at my local drop in citizens advice today as I just can't get an answer over the phone. I will take a good look at that website a bit later.  Thank you.

To hopeful

at the moment I'm still receiving child benefit but I'm worried about when my support for her stops I.e child tax credit as my income will be greatly diminished and her student loan doesn't start until her start date which is September 24th. So for 2-3 months I won't have enough to feed her let alone get all the other things she needs. And if she gets a little summer job I'm worried she'l have to pay out for that. Thanks for your reply. I'm wondering if anyone knows how much she can earn without it affecting my benefits.

I believe the benefits will carry on until 31 August.  My daughter is 19 and I have had a child benefit notice to say CHB will stop at the end of August - although she is carrying on in college, so it will carry on until she's 20, once she has her confirmation letter.

I live in Wales, and am not sure if things are different in England.

It is a worry when the benefits stop though, and we find we're still keeping them.

Thanks for reply sparklinglime. I really hope that will be the case for me. I did get a few websites that may help with grants to get the essentials so I think il try to see if we can get anything there. X

The expert will reply within a few working days normally, flowergirl, as obviously she gets a lot of enquiries. Fingers crossed there is some helpful news.
