Hello there, I am on process of job seeking allowance as I cannot find a job. My friend told me if I register with Jobcentre Plus I can get a help finding a job. I am not sure if I am eligible though! My husband lives abroad and earns £2,700 a month without any penny savings, we pay rent £1,100 a month and have 2 children aged 15 & 12. Now the question is, Am I entitled to get a Job seeking allowance? The Jobcentre Plus adviser seem to think I am but I am worried if I get misleaded as I happen to know, a couples who claims housing benefits and the woman was illiterate and was misguided with the application, she started working without informing the council and she is now facing prosecution. :( Thanks in advance!

Hi Mystica, I have moved your post, so that we can give you the right support.

I would suggest that you contact our Money Expert, tell them your situation and they will give you advice on how to go forward.

Are you still married with your husband? Even though he is working abroad are you still considered husband and wife?

I am not sure of the laws regarding husbands who spend more time abroad than at home, it is really worth contacting our Expert, who will be able to tell you. It may be that you are considered a single parent financially or not.

Give them all the details you can. I am presuming that you will be able to claim JSA, but it might be that your husband earns too much for you to claim and he would be expected to support you.

You always need to keep the Job Centre informed of what you are doing though. Otherwise you will get an overpayment and get into trouble.

Thanks Anna, I know what you mean they made decisions and later on tells you! Hang on! We just double check on our system that you were not actually entitled! so we want our money back! And they let that happens for 2 years and asked you to pay them back all the money they gave you! :O

Ahhh Mystica, you know the system then!! I had this happen to me, I have to pay them £20 a month until 2016!! Even though I tried to alert them to the problem they always told me, no it was fine!

You do have to keep on your toes, it is also a good idea to keep a record of all correspondence and what you were told. It can also be worthwhile photocopying any application forms you fill in for them.

Hey! Anna, I just discovered I am entitled to child tax benefits too! smiley I had this idea to look for what is my entitlement, as they are claiming back the child benefits they gave my husband for 2 years which is deposited to my bank account as I am the one who is taking care of our children here while he works abroad. smiley only mistake is, he did the claims which I should have done as I am here with the children! Now they are giving me more benefits I will use some of it to pay the debt they created for him! cheeky
