Hi hayley. I am on Income Support plus childs tax credit, so I'm not too sure what it is you're asking. If you have a child with a disability, then you're entitled to another allowance I'm sure.

Others will be along later, who'll be able to help you with this though.

Hi again hayley. I have copied and pasted this from 'your money' section. Don't know if it will help at all. You could also e.mail the 1-2-1 One Space advisors, who can also help you further.  here

 - Child Tax Credit:
you do not have to be employed to claim child tax credits but you do
need to be responsible for child/children aged 0 to 16 or over 16 and
attending full time education or training with an approved training
body. If you look after a disabled child who receives Disability Living Allowance at
the middle or high rate care component then there is a disabled child
premium paid on top of your child tax credit entitlement; you would need
to contact the Tax Credit Office for further advice.

Hang tight, someone will be along who will be able to advise you hayley. It is confusing isn't it. Why didn't the Benefit Office seem willing to help, although it doesn't surprise me at all!!!

Hi hayley

Thanks to hazeleyes for the links.

Whether you are on Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance or working, you will receive child tax credit for your children, provided your income is under a certain level and this can be enhanced if you have a child for whom you receive Disability Living Allowance. Have a look at the details here, and you can fill in the online calculator. You will see that the enhancement varies depending on whether your child is disabled or severely disabled and whilst Disability Living Allowance is not means-tested, other benefits you may get, such as a carer's allowance, will affect your benefits. But you should already be receiving child tax credit as income support for children is being replaced with that benefit.

However, it is the benefit you receive for YOURSELF that changes as to whether you work or not, ie you can get Working Tax Credit if you are working at least 16 hours a week. Whilst lone parents usually come off Income Support once their youngest reaches the age of seven, there are different rules for parents with a child for whom Disability Living Allowance at the middle or higher rate of care component is received.

However, this is a minefield!!! and the main thing is that you get everything you are entitled to. I suggest you check this out with our money experts, who will be able to pinpoint this for you. Here is the link again, to email them. Let them know the ages of your children and what you currently receive including details of the rates for any Disability Living Allowance and carer's allowance.

All the best
