Everyone will have different opinions about what is best in their situation however these are some advantages and disadvantages associated with working and single parenthood.

 Advantages:

  • To have a career outside the home
  • To meet people
  • To be financially better off (?)
  • To reduce stigma
  • Better off in the long term
  • To climb the career ladder
I am working part time and it makes me feel better, part of society again you know, I don’t feel on the heap, single mother and that’s it!

I need to work for other reasons not just money. The work that I do I find that it does challenge me and I’m learning lots of new things, it’s keeping my mind alive and I’m being stimulated by it and that has become important.

Disadvantages:

  • Juggling – difficult to look after one’s children, oneself, the home & work
  • May compromise ability to parent
  • Added overheads – new clothes, transport
  • Likely to need childcare
  • Reapply for benefits – cash flow problems
  • Stress
Really and truly, looking after them at this stage I wouldn’t want to miss out on it to be honest.

I was working full time and it was really difficult. The school have inset days and concerts. I didn’t have much annual leave and it was difficult to fit it all in. The manager knew me and I managed to jiggle things around and work extra hours but it was difficult to get away with, and it was stressful trying to do it. So I was really glad when I left.
