Full Time Parent

Many single parents would like to get off benefits but doing paid work, and looking after children alone, may not always be the best thing to do. This may be due to your own beliefs about being a parent, your current personal circumstances or it may not be difficult to find childcare or get a good job in your area.

By not working you may have:
  • Time to be there for children without compromising especially if they are young, disabled or have special needs or if you have recently become a single parent
  • More opportunity to see the children grow up and develop
  • More energy to play with children or help them with homework etc
  • Some time for your needs especially;
if you have a large family/health problems or if you have recently become a single parent.
  • Not have to use/pay for childcare or rely on help form others
  • Able to drop off and pick up school children, get to know other parents and your children’s friend
  • Time to go back to education or do voluntary work
I just decided I wanted to look after my daughter, I didn't really make a plan it just happened. She needs me around, especially in the first five years, it's very important to bond with your child.
Not being in paid work can mean:
  • A lack of money
  • Dependency on benefits and associated stigma
  • Less chance to meet people/ isolation
  • Lack of a career and the status it brings
  • Your qualifications and work experience become out of date
  • Your children may miss out on good quality childcare and its benefits
  • You don’t get a break away from house and from your children
  • Your choices for the future are limited
