Mixed Parentage Families

Mixed race, mixed parentage, dual heritage, the list is endless. These are just a few examples of the labels used to identify children, young people and adults who have one parent who is from a visible minority ethnic group. This particular group experience some very unique problems, one of which is racism. There are many myths, assumptions and a great deal of ignorance about mixed parentage families, yet little research, knowledge and understanding. Here some single parents share their stories.

Vicky's story
Vicky is 30 and has lived in Bristol for 10 years. She has two children, a boy and a girl, both under five. She has been a single parent for under a year.
Janet's story
Janet is 54 and has two children, a son of 30 and a daughter of 26. Their father is originally from Jamaica.
Sandy's story
Sandy is 34 and lives with her teenage son. His father is African/Caribbean.
Anjali's story
Anjali is 37 and has two children both under five. Her parents were Indian and English.
