When they come knocking

The catalogue lady.

Q    I bought things for my kids Christmas from the catalogue lady for £300 and got a cash loan for £180 to get a bed for my son and I’m supposed to pay these off every week. But I’ve only got income support coming in and don’t have enough to pay them. I keep hiding when they come knocking and don’t know what to do.

A    It is very important that you contact in writing people that you owe money to and explain your change of circumstances and why you are unable to make payments that become due. It is also a good idea to provide at the same time information about your income and expenditure and make a payment offer. This may have to be a token amount of, say, £1.00 per month where there is serious financial hardship. Starting to make these payments straightaway would be a positive gesture of goodwill. There are clear guidelines about acceptable practices for debt collection and if you continue to be pressurised get help from a CAB or other independent agency.
