Do I have to pay my ex-partner's debts?

Dealing with debt collectors.

Q    My partner left me after eight years with two kids and I don’t know where he’s living. I keep getting threatening phone calls and debt collectors at the door demanding money for loans he took out. I can’t afford to pay them so how can I get them to stop?

A    It is essential that these debt collectors are made aware that your partner is no longer living with you and the relationship is ended. You have no obligation or liability for his debt and you should point this out. Ideally you should write to the companies concerned with this information and (also keep a copy for yourself). In this way there will be a proper record and basis for complaint if future contact is made.

Harassment is against the law and if problems persist seek help from a CAB or other independent agency.
