Exercise

Do you know that you can drastically reduce the chances of major illnesses such as heart disease by taking exercise? Exercise really does put a spring in your step.

If you don't know what exercise classes are available locally, ring the Leisure Services department of your local council to find out. It can be particularly difficult for single parents to get to go to the gym. Time, energy, money as well as childcare can seem like major hindrances. But don't despair - you can still get fit!

Caroline says:

"I really wanted to get some exercise. But what with a new full time job, getting my daughter to and from school and fitting in shopping and housework, I kept putting it off. I could feel myself losing energy. So I asked her dad to look after her and booked in for a gym induction. I left so full of energy after the session. When I went into work on Monday everyone commented that I looked really perky! I've also joined a cycling club. We head off on a long cycle on Wednesday evenings, and my daughter comes along on the tagalong. Everyone was really friendly and it's a good way of meeting new people, as I've just moved to a new city."

Exercise classes - who needs them? How to get fit without wearing lycra

  1. If you have the time and commitment, a dog can be a wonderful way to stay healthy. Before choosing a dog find out about its temperament. Some need less walks than others, so if you're busy it may be worth going for a breed that enjoys a short sprint around the park.
  2. Or you could walk with people instead of a dog. Some local authorities offer free guided walks. For information see (link)
  3. Exercise videos - most libraries have some available or you may find that your friends have some unwanted ones you could borrow, or try a car boot sale.
  4. Gardening - all that lifting, digging and stretching helps to keep you fit and healthy, as well as getting some air into your lungs.
  5. Leave the car at home and walk or cycle to work or school. This will save you money as well as giving you exercise.
If you're pregnant you may need to avoid certain exercises. Find out what's suitable here:
