Diversity

Single parents in the UK are a diverse group of people – for example, they may be widowed, divorced or never married, male or female, gay or heterosexual and from many different cultural backgrounds. Diversity includes ethnicity, gender, disability, class, culture, sexuality, religion and geographic location.

Groups need to reflect on how diverse they are and be aware of what the group looks like. If members of your group are all female, 30 something and white how would single parents who don’t fit into these boxes participate in your group? What could you do to widen participation from members of the wider community and make them feel welcome? What different needs and interests might people have?

These are some of the questions that your group may need to discuss to ensure participation from all single parents and to help sustain the group and encourage new members.
