Single Parent Working Abroad

Hey guys. Im a single mum and am considering living/working abroad. Was wondering if anyone had any tips/ideas/websites that might be beneficial, or provide more information. I will need to sort child visa requirements, as well as my own, and also childcare if necessary. Do i need the consent of my 3month olds father? Is this specific to the country im applying to, or stipulated by the British Government? Also, what are likely to be the implications on my childs education/general happiness? Obviously i dont want to drag him off round the world on a whim, but i think if done properly we could both benefit. (moral advice is welcome!) At the moment its just an idea, but im keen to find out more! Would appreciate anuthing relevant, and am open to suggestions! Thanks

Hi,

I'm a single mum looking for work abroad too so identify with everything you've said.  My son is 12 though so a little different.  It does at times feel as though it's impossible to make the move.  I have explained to my son that I want him to experience life in a different country before he makes any decisions about what he wants to do with his life. He is happy with the idea and understands why we are trying to do it - life is short and we all need to make the most of it.  It's doing it that is the tricky bit !!  Australia would be my first choice but with being a single parent, I don't have enough points or cash to go.

I am trying to resarch schools etc to try and identify which country would be good to start with.  I think that you maybe need to do the same.  It is time consuming but will be worth it.

I have also got agencies e-mailing me with current employment vacancies in various countries.

I hadn't thought about the fathers consent so I will need to look into that.

Is there any work that you are trained to do or do you have any ideas about the sort of work that you will want to do?

I can pass on any more info that I find out and would be interested to know how you get on.

Go for it and Good Luck !!

Hi Shelley,

I've just found this site and am looking at options for me and my 12 year old son to spend 6 months abroad whilst I earn a basic income. I'm finding it quite difficult to find people to talk to about this and wondered how you were getting on, or if you've managed to arrange anything and could signpost me anywhere? Any thoughts from anyone else welcome too.

I'm asking the same question!! Seems there are no easy answers to this one... My boy is 3 and I'm thinking along the line of trying to find a voluntary placement abroad. Potentially great for both of us, if of course the right thing comes up. Everywhere I have asked, they express how they are open to the idea, but then I never hear back.  Has anyone had any joy?
