Single parents who choose free range chicken

Posted by Dionne Farley at April 09. 2008

I am a researcher on the next installment of Hugh's Chicken Run. I am looking for low earners/single parents/people on benefits who choose to buy free range chicken (and make sacrifices elsewhere)

If this applies to you, please get in touch with me at: dionne@keofilms.com

Thanks

Dionne

Hello Dionne, I am 32 weeks pregnant with my first child. I'm 33yrs old and my partner of 8yrs left me when I was 9 weeks pregnant, as a result I had to move and give up my business. I don't have much money saved and for a while at least am going to have to live on benefits. Despite this I will always buy free range chickens and in fact have one in the fridge to cook tomorrow. When I was a child we kept chickens, my Auntie worked for a while at a battery farm. She took my brother and I there so we could see how the chickens are farmed for their eggs. The chickens my family had were mostly ex-battery hens. Apart from the welfare reasons I buy free range chicken as I feel you get more for your money. The meat is far tastier but as it isn't fatty pumped full of water, it goes a lot further. Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy all my meat free range so I stick to Chicken as much as possible. I do not feel I need to make sacrifices elsewhere as a free range hen will last for a number of meals and I boil the bones for stock. I hope this helps with your research Lorna Brook

Lorna i think you have to go to her web address to add your comment, I have always tried to buy free range eggs etc , but the current increase in prices , are having a big impact on my budget and unfortunately last week i had to buy regular eggs, saving a vast amount of money, but i did look at the code on the eggs and it didn't make me feel good that they weren't free range,.

It is the same in the price of chickens, on low income and a very tight budget, we chose either to eat the chicken or not and choose alternative menus.

Non-free range chicken is half the price of free-range chickens...
