6.7 – Helping children to learn – a day in the life

Look at the following example that outlines a day in the life of a child. At the end, open your worksheet and write down five learning opportunities in each, and how the parent used them.

A day in the life of Subax

Bilan has a three year old daughter, Subax. When Subax gets up in the morning she gets washed, brushes her teeth and gets dressed. Bilan always uses the 3 minute egg timer for teeth brushing and Subax is allowed to say when time’s up. Bilan explains, “Today we need a warm jumper because it’s not Summer anymore – it’s getting colder.”

Subax is given the spoons to put on the kitchen table and then Bilan explains that we need bowls for cereal and cold milk out of the fridge. Subax is offered juice or water to drink. Bilan notices it’s raining outside and asks Subax “Which shoes should we wear when it’s raining?” When Subax says “Wellies.”, Bilan says “Yay, well done!”

On the way to nursery Bilan and Subax play ‘spot the red car’ and say Good Morning and Thank You to the lollipop lady. In the nursery Bilan encourages Subax to find her named coat-peg.

Subax’s Dad, Mahmoud, picks her up from nursery on his bike. He explains, “We need to wear a helmet each to keep our heads safe.” and tells her they are going to the park. In the park Mahmoud reads the sign that says Close the Gate and Subax helps to close it.

They say ‘higher’ when they push the swing, count the steps to the slide and look at the daisies. They take some daisies home for Mum.

On the way home Mahmoud sings a Somali traditional song that involves Subax clapping in time to the music.

At home Subax has a bath and her Dad helps her to float her rubber duck and fill and empty some plastic bottles. After Mahmoud says goodnight Bilan and Subax have supper. Bilan says that its fish and rice and that it is very tasty!

After supper Bilan and Subax build a house out of bricks and then tidy up the toys together. Then it’s teeth, bedtime story and night nights.
