5.9 – Negotiation scenarios

You can agree with what your children want (unless it’s outrageous!), but it’s good to tell them what you need them to do first, then when they do it you always thank and praise them.

Remember what we have already covered in this course about children copying our behaviour; it pays to be polite to them and they will then be polite to us as well as other people. This will serve them well in life – We all like polite people!

Look at the following questions and write your answers in your worksheet. What would you do? What would you say?

Scenario
1.Telly Addict: Billy is six. He comes in from school and wants to put children’s TV on. You want him to give you his packed lunch box, empty his PE bag, get out of his school uniform and do some homework.
2.Basketball Dreams: Yonis is nine. He wants to go out to play basketball with his friends on Saturday morning. You want him to bring his dirty washing to you, tidy his bedroom, clean his trainers, do his homework or write to his uncle.

How did you find it? Have a look on the next page for feedback on how you could negotiate in these situations…
